Team Binay is born
Team Binay is born | Manila Standard Today
It’s more than year before the next elections, but already the thoughts of politicians have turned to May 2013. Forget about the Corona impeachment trial: it’s election season, the only period that is even longer than this country’s world-beating Christmas holidays.
This early, Vice President Jejomar Binay has come up with a powerhouse Senate slate for next year that has almost nothing to do with the Aquino administration to which Binay nominally belongs. And all that this supposedly wildly popular President can come up with, in response, is a lineup that can’t even reach the required 12 names.
Indeed, if the limp statements emanating from Malacañang in reaction to the creation of the powerhouse United Nationalist Alliance lineup of Binay and former President Joseph Estrada are any indication, it appears that the chances of Aquino’s bets, as they say, range firmly from slim to none. And it’s not as if Malacañang has not been working overtime to cobble together a competitive or even a complete Senate team.
At this point, only Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and still-seeking-a-position Rissa Hontiveros seem to be sure of slots in the LP Senate ticket. And it’s highly doubtful if either of these women will enter the “Magic 12
Other wannabe LP senators like Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon and his deputy, former Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim may be included in the final LP lineup, but they have even less chances of winning that those two women. As for the other palace allies who had wanted to join the administration ticket through their association with the prosecution in the Corona impeachment trial, they’ve now practically given up the ghost, as well; it’ almost certain you will not be seeing “Niel Tupas Jr.” on the Senate ballot next May—unless Tupas goes crazy and runs anyway.
This, despite the tireless efforts of Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas and Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo to recruit potential LP senators all over the country, using a private plane loaned by a businessman in the mining game. Roxas himself is wisely not running in the next elections and Robredo is in the same boat as the other “unwinnables” associated with Aquino.
And unless LP can come up with that old black magic that made it win 2010, it looks like Aquino should give up on next year’s polls altogether—or adopt Binay’s team as his own.
Gibo will run for senate under Binay's UNA!
