I wish city councilors would start debating about banning plastics (or at least banning plastic bags) and find out if such bans can be done locally. To ignore the issue is a mistake.

Plastics, Styrofoam ban to be enforced in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY—Albay is set to implement in the middle of this year an anti-plastic ordinance after Albay Gov. Joey S. Salceda signed Sangguniang Panlalawigan Ordinance 2011-3 on February 21 last year which gives an ample time for commercial establishments to prepare for its full implementation.

Secretary Rogelio Singson of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), meanwhile, directed the agency’s officials in Albay to complete the repair and rehabilitation of Busay-Bongalon River Control Project in Daraga.

The ban on plastics, Salceda said, shows the province’s firm commitment to protect the environment and pursue its climate-change adaptation program (CCA). Albay, upon implementation of the ordinance, goes on record as one of the first few provinces in the country to do so.

The Albay anti-plastic ordinance penalizes violators with fines ranging from P1,000 to P5,000 and cancellation of business permits. It encourages the public to instead use bags made of recyclable and biodegradable materials such as paper, buri and abaca.

The DPWH has initially implemented the construction and completion of a 40-lineal-meter dike with steel sheet pile foundation for the Busay-Bongalon River Control Project in Daraga after recent heavy rains damaged the dike.

Some P20 million was released to the Albay Engineering Office for the repair of the damaged structure, including the construction of 80-lineal-meter concrete dike and lower the rock formation of Busay Falls by 2.5 meters and widen its river bed by 14 meters.

Cebu Capitol as well as all of Cebu's LGUs should start discussing/debating plastic bans, especially among those who claimed to care about the environment.

    Should Cebu be left behind?

No doubt Makati City researched Muntinlupa's plastic ban and noticed the number of LGU's that followed. Here's an informative video of enforcing plastic ban in Muntinlupa.

Examine the garbage collected in your neighborhood. Watch and learn.

Di lang sa Cebu, hasta na pod ag Bohol ang mag-discuss anang kasoha. Plastics should be sent to the recycling plants for the sake of the RRR:
    Reduce.
    Reuse.
    Recycle.
