The disadvantage is the cost in terms of time. It is a three-year course of self-study that is equivalent to a one-year Masters in Finance. You may be asked to read many books, attend many classes, and lead many group discussions. Check google for CHARTERED FINANCIAL ANALYST curriculum. I used to teach preparatory courses for CFA level 1.

Asset Allocation, Risk Management, Financial Statement Analysis (Seven classes)
Valuation (Three classes)
Portfolio Management (seven classes) .... You may have to read six whole books and take many "comprehension checks." The best way to do this course of study is to enroll for the CFA program -- it is a universally-recognized designation for the financial & investment field. If you pass those three exams, it means you know, what it takes to be, an intelligent investor, somebody like the president of a mutual-fund company.
