You can copy most Facebook functionality in just a few days. There are a number of open source Facebook clones out there. The most mature software that I've found so far is Elgg, but you still need to tweak its design. Next is Diaspora, but it's not there yet. GNU Social is a mature platform, but it's only mature in its micro-blogging area. The social networking aspect is still under development. There's Appleseed too, but it's crap. It's supposed to be years ahead of Diaspora and GNU Social but it doesn't work as of the moment. OneSocialWeb is interesting but it lacks many features. The interface is clean though, and it uses XMPP behind the scenes. It uses Java though, so I have low expectations on its speed and scalability.
It has a nice Android GUI.
