    Downtown Déjà vu

The term deja vu is French and means, literally, "already seen." Those who have experienced the feeling describe it as an overwhelming sense of familiarity with something that shouldn't be familiar at all. This is my third photowalk in downtown cebu and the action in downtown always excite me.

We depart at McDonalds Jones' branch, our route will be Pasil, Tabuan, Carbon, Sto Niño, Cathedral, Fort San Pedro.

The Pasil Market is the main “bagsakan” or dropping off point for fish and seafood in Cebu. It is apparently the largest such market in the Visayas. And it certainly is large and has a tremendous amount of fish on offer. This area of Cebu City is one of the poorest. Its a slum area and its home to hundreds of homeless families who have to result into squatting and livelihoods that are hazardous to their health.

The Tabo-an (Taboan, Tabuan) Market near downtown Cebu is one of the most massive and pungent dried fish markets in the South. There are many such markets in all major provincial cities but this was just impressive in scale, volume of goods and staying power of its utterly pungent aroma (it literally sticks to your clothes in the same way that Japanese food seems to do as well).

The Carbon Market is a lively and colorful place where you can see a huge variety of local fish, fruits, flowers, and sweets for sale, as well as handicraft items from Cebu and nearby islands. Located at the end of the Cebu railway line , the area was used to store coal in the days when it powered steam engines that in turn generated power for the city. With all the huge mountains of coal stores, it became known as The Carbon. Today, it is a huge market, the largest on the island of Cebu, and it almost always has a stunning amount of produce on offer.

Colon Street is a crowded street in downtown Cebu City that is often called the oldest street in the Philippines. It is named after Christopher Columbus. It traces its origins to the town plan by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the Spanish conquistador who arrived in the Philippines to establish a colony in 1565.

Colon, a bit run-down now, was the site of fashionable shops, offices and movie houses. It was once the heart of Cebu City's shopping and business activity, but in recent years much of this activity has shifted inland to uptown areas.

Thanks for Brian of IPC for inviting us (cebuphoto.org) to join their weekend photowalk in downtown cebu.
