if you're looking for the compatibility, software, games...go windows....but you have to pay...it's like 6k i think for the Home edition of XP....

if you're looking for a cheap solution, office terminal, for example...find a suitable linux distro...i'd suggest either fedora core 5 or openSUSE 10.1...or if you're a newbie at the whole thing, Ubuntu...

So that we could have a taste of both flavors, you can do dual boot. Install Windows on one hard drive and Linux Fedora on the other. Within the installation environment of Fedora, it lets you choose to have "other system boot", thus preserving your Windows. Once done, you should have two system on one machine. Again, as what the rest of the guys replied, it depends on the purpose of the machine and application it is intended to. What I noticed with Fedora is that it's system alone consumes a lot of space around 4gb excluding the server system. Probably, it's code had not yet been optimized.

if you like linux... use KDE desktop UI in any linux distribution. its closely similar to Windows.

well if your just concerned of the looks, KDE has more visual eye-candy than windows XP without installing any third parties

katong celeron 800mhz pa akong processor, ga linux jd ko. kay mag ungot2 sa windows xp. pero ok ra ang performance niya sa linux. gentoo man to akong g gamit. kapoy sad huwat ato para ma human ug compile. stage 1 man to, 2005.0. limited lang jd ang games na naa sa linux. mao na ga windows ko karon, then athlon64 naman sad akong processor so, ok2 na. pero mingawon ghapon ko sa linux usahay.
