The Fantastic Six are Cited and Cheered during Nets-Bobcats Game

April 14, 2009 NEW JERSEY -- “Go out to play and have fun playing. Because if you love playing, you’re gonna be good.”

That’s what NBA Legend Ron Harper told the Jr. NBA Philippines Team, including Mark Jayven Tallo, Marvin Roland Muller, Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw, Carlo Escalambre, Aldrin Fegidero and Michael Jay Javelosa, after their hour-long but very meaningful basketball session at the IZOD Center Monday (Tuesday, Manila time) – one of the highlights of the Jr. NBA Philippines Team’s US tour, a reward for topping the Jr. NBA Philippines presented by Hi-Smart, scheduled from November 2008 to March 2009.

The former Bulls stalwart who played alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen when Chicago made its most amazing run in the NBA history, treated the six boys to basketball lessons – Harper style. No instructions, no coaching, just sweet, fun games that inspired the boys to bring out their best in various aspects of the game.

At one point, the five-time NBA champion Harper let each young cager wear his blingy championship ring, then challenged each one to top his score. “Whoever scores higher gets the ring. I’m laying it on the line,” he said playfully.

Harper came to play at IZOD, home of the New Jersey Nets, with his Filipina wife Maria Pizarro-Harper and their two sons, Dylan Robert and Ronald, Jr. in tow. Interestingly, Harper’s wife, whose family is from Bataan, plays some mean basketball herself and coaches girls basketball teams that compete in the area. US Jr. NBA Coach Frank Lopez and local Jr. NBA coach Elmer Cabahug also joined in the learn-and-play session that was scheduled specially for the visiting young Filipino cagers.

“I know how amazing Filipinos are when it comes to basketball,” Harper said. “I’d really like to go to the Philippines soon.”

Earlier in the day, the Pinoy teeners were toured around the NBA Studio and saw how NBA basketball games are covered, produced and stored. The NBA in effect opened its arms to the young Filipino hopefuls as they were assigned a special vantage point to watch the New Jersey Nets-Charlotte Bobcats game – the last regular game at the IZOD Center for the 2008-09 NBA Season.

They were also invited to attend a cozy NBA pre-game party and had the chance to hobnob with another NBA legend, Daryl Dawkins, the man they call “Chocolate Thunder”. Midway into the game the boys were introduced to the stadium by the voice-over and enjoyed a full moment in the spotlight, literally, as TV cameras were trained on them while their accomplishments and Philippine basketball were cited by the NBA. Jr. NBA Philippines became a part of the NBA game coverage.

On Tuesday, the boys take on a new challenge: play against a taller, heftier Jr. NBA New Jersey Team.

“This is really a dream come true. Actually, we did not even dream this would happen,’ said Jr. NBA camp MVP Mark Jayven Tallo. “Our parents are very proud of us and we feel really privileged to be a part of all this.”

The Fantastic Six also get to tour New York City on April 15 (April 16, Manila). The boys return home this weekend to Manila and Cebu.

The 2008-09 Jr. NBA Philippines Program presented by Hi-Smart consists of intensive basketball training, skills development and grassroots talent identification among the youth in various countries across the globe. This year, it reached out to over 200 schools across the Philippines and involved around 20,000 students, parents, and coaches in the program.

Apart from Hi-Smart , other Jr. NBA Philippines associate partners are Basketball TV, Caltex, Gatorade, and Spalding as Associate Partners. Official Outfitter is adidas and Official Media Partner is the Philippine Star.

This is the second consecutive Jr. NBA program in the Philippines. There are plans to bring the program to more cities next year and to expand the program for Jr. NBA basketball tournaments in the Asian region.
