im not into jazz gyud, i just pick lines and try to incorporate it to my style of playing... feel raman na bro, just like wat primal said. pede sad ni: pick a song (just a simple one para dli kaau lisod) that u really like and then play it (could be blues or jazz or country, etc.) then try to improvise it; licks, lead lines etc. and just have fun improvising it and who knows wat hidden avenues could you open from improvising that song. by improvising ur exploring possibilities, trying ur own ideas for that song and at the same time exercising those fingers..

try Eric Johnson's Manhattan.. it's jazz with a hint of blues and specks of country subtly scattered in the song to produce one hellova tone.

sa blues brod (and this is what i dig in) it's all about feel and strong emotion coz The Blues is the song of the Black People driven as slaves in America long time ago, that's what The Blues is all about. As time passed nawala na ang notion sa slavery sa songs pero nagpabilin ang strong emotion, and "feel". Ug paminawon nimo si Stevie Ray Vaughan brod u can hear that the guy was playing from the heart (Texas Flood, Crossfire, The Sky is Cryin' (ang iyang version) etc.) and he was using wat scale? You have it correct brod, the pentatonic blues scale + a Texan's way of playing it, all the time na brod iyaha lang gipang splice then buling bulingan nyag virtouso wa na rakrak na dayn. Clapton's blues is somewat like BB King's and Robert Johnson's, a Delta/Mississippi which is somewhat mellower than SRV's Texas Blues but still played from the heart (Walkin' Blues, Crossroads, etc.) gi pun-an lang ni Clapton ug virtouso bah coz BB is not. So The Blues is all about feel as most would agree.

Jazz on the other hand, IMHO, is like painting (hehehe).. A jazzplayer chooses and picks melodies and scales to put in a piece just like a painter chooses colors and hues in a pallette to put in the canvass. Naa gapon ang emotion and feel pero mas light (again IMHO) compared sa Blues. More on color ang jazz brod and "color" in this sense is picking the right scales and stitching them together to create a jazz piece that one has in mind or is eventually going to play. Larry Carlton, Wes Montgomery, Frank Gambale (sweep picking) among the many jazz cats do this becoz, from listening to their creations, mao na akong nakita in my opinion. Maau sila mamili ug skala bah nya sagolan sad nilag right-hand teknik aw "colorful" kaau ilang tinukaran hehe..

To sum it all up brod if we are going to likened music (daghan kinds of music pero kini lang duha Blues and Jazz) to the force in star wars; The Blues is the dark side while Jazz is the light side. Paminawa kasagaran message sa blues songs di ba about kasakit, dimalas, etc. basta sumting negative while ug maminaw kag jazz pieces feel nato pang easy easy bah, laid-back and light like taking a walk in the park.

Hope my two cents on the subject helps.

right on! right now nag focus pa ko sa mga technicalities nya, For a week i'm having a blast with the major 7 arpeggios and how it sets a mood to your playing. And playing a mixolydian over a dominant 7th chord. I'm fascinated how robben ford plays that mode over the blues. Carlton keeps things simple yet very effective which i really like about him.

I have to agree with jazz and painting. There's a Kandinsky painting that looks exactly like jazz music.

yes i've tried this though i'm not really a huge fan for covers unless ganahan kaayu ko sa song. I tried a rolling stone song "you can't always get what you want" and changed the key to B minor (i'm not sure if mao sad ni nga key sa original song but it sounded better to my ears).. really enjoyed it after realizing it sounded a bit pop which is a surprise. Mao nakalingaw ani bisyuha kay it surprises me every now and then
