The California State Athletic Commission has temporarily suspended the license of championship fighter Antonio Margarito after a substance was found inside the boxer's gloves prior to a fight Saturday night against "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Tim Noonan, the chairman of the CSAC, said the suspension would remain in effect until the organization has fully investigated the nature of the substance. Margarito's corner man, Javier Capetillo, also had his license temporarily suspended.

Margarito lost the fight and his WBA welterweight title at the Staples Center Saturday night when Mosley scored a technical knockout 43 seconds into the ninth round.

About a half-hour before the fight started, officials found what was deemed as a "plaster-like" illegal substance in Margarito's hand wraps. The gauze and taped wraps are used to protect the hands before the gloves are put on, but in Margarito's case he had a questionable substance that was removed only after the complaining of Mosley's trainer, Nazim Richardson.

Noonan said the substance is currently being analyzed by the California Department of Justice.

"The licenses of Mr. Margarito and Mr. Capetillo were suspended pursuant to Business and Professions Code section 18842, which allows for the temporary suspension of a license when such an action is necessary to 'protect the public welfare,'" said Noonan in a statement. "CSAC Rule 323 limits the amount and type of gauze and tape allowed under a fighter's boxing glove. Rule 390 allows CSAC to discipline a licensee when his or her actions are a 'discredit to boxing' or violate the rules of CSAC."

Margarito and Capetillo were asked to appear before the CSAC at a hearing on February 10.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former welterweight titleholder Antonio Margarito had his license suspended Wednesday by the California State Athletic Commission while it investigates a plaster-like substance found under the boxer's hand wraps before his loss last weekend to Shane Mosley.
The commission also suspended the license of Margarito's trainer Javier Capetillo and asked both to appear at a hearing Feb. 10.

The substance was bagged as evidence before the bout Saturday at Staples Center and was being analyzed by the California Department of Justice, the commission said. The panel was investigating whether any rules were violated.

Commission Chairman Tim Noonan said the inquiry stems from a commission rule that limits the amount and type of gauze and tape allowed under a fighter's glove. He said the commission has authority to discipline athletes when their actions are a "discredit to boxing." Reprimands could include fines, suspensions or revocation of licenses.

The commission did not say how long the investigation would last
