ezra is right... new yerk dolls was the first true punk band. *** pistols was patterned after this band. and i think mclaren was also the manager of new york dolls.
New York Dolls is one of the pioneers of punk, although it was not yet called "punk" at the time. it was in a New York club called CBGBs, where The Ramones are regulars, that the music was started to be called "punk" after an underground music magazine with the same name.
After watching a show at CBGBs, Malcolm McLaren, who used to managed the New York Dolls, thought that the fashion was great (torn shirts, pants attached together by safety pins and all) and decided to bring the designs with him to London. He opened a store, and named it ***, then formed and managed a band, named it *** Pistols (after his store), to advertise and promote his clothes.
During this time, The Clash, already a band, didn't have an identity yet. It was only when The Ramones performed in UK for the first time, that The Clash, after seeing The Ramones, was able to grasp the sound of punk.
From that time on, punk was divided into US punk (headed by The Ramones) and UK punk (headed by the *** Pistols and The Clash), but still doing the same basic sound: 3 chords, 4/4 beat, and a guy screaming in the microphone.
thats is correct. one of my dream is to go to CBGB OMFUG hehehehe... if i can afford a plane ticket to the US. hehehehe...
3 chords and the truth! that is what punk rock is all about.
I had the priviledge of playing at CBGB's gallery, lounge, and the main bar ... awesome place to play.. it's also the smelliest and filthiest place I've ever played in.
