I have lived and work in Japan for a total of nearly 10 years. Worked for a Japanese company more than that and still under Japanese management on my present job now. My children were also born in Japan but eventually we decided to come back to Cebu even if we love Japan so much including the salary package. We are dreaming to get back there for vacation to visit old friends.

The culture really is very disciplined and we have lots to learn from them in terms of dealing with our neighbors and kapwa tao. Courtesy and respect is very important. Ethics and norms are very much observed even above business performance. What really matters is integrity of oneself and the company you belong to. Work is not really so much based on individual performance since Japanese culture relies more on teamwork, group effort or buddy system, junior-senior relationship or mentorship unlike western cultures where individualism is name of the game. "We" instead of "I" although lately some companies are encouraging individual achievement, the environment is still very team-activated. Trustworthiness and consistency is treated with honor in a Japanese society so once you can maintain this you will surely be successful. Just like in any culture, communication is important, so if you know Nihonggo then you possess already the ice-breaker for any relationship building intent you may have with them.

What is very bad though is when these people come to work here in Philippines and they start imitating our surroundings especially when some of our fellow pinoys or their fellow japinoys(Pinoy-grown Japanese or those who have decided to stay here after marrying a pinay or found Pinas a better place for them since they are treated like kings)teach them that it is OK to bully or feel superior and they start being sarcastic, discriminating, and unfair. I have met lots of them here in Cebu but there are some who have changed because they had an equally bad experience with a pinoy.

In my present job, I am dealing with Japanese, Indian, European, North American, and Filipino customers. The Japanese are the best customers since they are very reasonable and compassionate. But they would never forgive you if you are not consistent with your commitments. They expect you to work hard for them no matter how difficult it is and what outcome it may have since they will respect you through your effort.

I hope I have given some insight on this thread. Thanks.
