If I'm not mistaken po, in those early days of Adobe... they only make apps for Apple.
"In the mid-1980s, soon after introducing PostScript, Adobe entered the consumer software market with Adobe Illustrator, a vector-based drawing program for the Apple Macintosh."

Hers a good challenge in adobe Illustrator, to create a Gear using only pure adobe illustrator and include the steps on how you do it either flat or 3d form of gear.
Thanks and good luck.

The Gear Challenge (Adobe Illustrator CS):

1. Create a cirle. Hit L key to use the Ellipse Tool. While holding shift, drag your cursor to create a perfect circle.
2. Zigzag It! Effect > Distort & Transform > Zig Zag ...
3. If you wish to go further into 3d, go to Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel ...
Below is a button I made using gradient mesh.

Try it. It's more challenging.
nice input you have..
you may also try this

1 creat a circle (L) with a cross guide(drag from ruler)
2 copy the circle and paste in front (Ctrl F) and adjust with the free transform tool (E)
3 using the star tool, click at the center of the cross and input the exact numbers of the gear teeth and ajust with the free transform.
4 select all the path you created and used the pathfinder and click the divide button.
5 fill it with color
6 start deleting the extra path to resemble the gear
7 used the pathfinder and click the join or merge button while holding the Ctrl key
8 just add 3d effect
this is just simply using pathfinder
gud lak
The only difference with yours and my procedure is the creation of the gear teeths.
You use the star tool while mine is simply zigzagging the circle.
