If my source is correct the following is an interesting behind the scene story of the Robert Ludlum novel:
The screenplay is written by Tony Gilroy based upon the book written by Rober Ludlum in the late 1970's during the Martial Law years. Accordingly, Ludlum stayed in Manila when he was writing the book, since he is virtually unknown to many Filipinos, he can easily blend in everyday Manila when he was writing the novel.
Ludlum has to stay along Leon Guinto and Apacible Streets in a modest apartment when he was writing the book to give the lead character Jason Bourne the feel on how it is to live as a fugitive in Manila. Every day he strolls along Pedro Gil to PGH all the way to the NBI HQ and from Padre Faura to UN Ave. all the way to the Museum, to Finance Road to the US Embassy, to the Post Office up to the Manila Cathedral to have a better grasp of old Manila. There were times when Ludlum was seen in Fort Santiago, to Paco Park, to the university belt along Recto to chaotic Divisoria.
When Ludlum was almost to finish the book, he stopped writing and went back to the States, the reason was never known and the much laboured book did not see the printing press, instead Ludlum went to Bourne trilo---- and his book on Bourne in Manila and was lost for 30 years. It was however found by Tony Gilroy even before writing the three Jason Bourne screenplays.
Like Ludlum, to give Gilroy the feel of the character, he flew to Manila to write the screenplay based on the 30 year old Ludlum unpublished novel. Both the writer and screen writer wrote based on hands-on experience of old Manila to make the story very authentic and realistic. The plot however starts in France then will bring the characters to Istanbul, all the way to Singapore, Hong Kong then finally to the Manila.
It must be remembered that the original "Bourne Identity" novel was written during the Cold War Era and has to be re-written when it was made into a movie starring Matt Damon in a post Cold War world. However, there was already a "Bourne Identity" movie in the 80's starring Richard Chamberlain ["Count of Monte Cristo" & "Towering Inferno"] and Jaclyn Smith [of the "Charlie's Angels" TV fame].
