I've just been to the ce-gnu-lug meeting this evening. There were plenty of discussions on how we can help out I-cafes on installing and deploying linux. The objective was to have an entirely open source solution to the net cafe setup. The current plan of action are enumerated below:

Select the appropriate Linux Distribution:

1) Fedora Core 4
2) Ubuntu
3) Debian
4) etc.

Identify Applications:

1) Identify which applications are mostly/commonly used in I-cafes
2) If such applications can run on top of Wine/Cedega - and this is to protect you current investment in software. Since some icafes may have already purchased licenses for such (apps like photoshop, dreamweaver, can run on top of wine).
3) If No.2 is not possible, propose an alternative Linux based application simillar in function - i.e. Yahoo IM's Linux version is crippled (no webcam support, audibles, avatars, etc), but there is an open source version for Yahoo which is capable of doing such - gyach-E.
4) Provide an installation/image CD ready to be deployed in i-cafes.

Linux on Games and online games:

There were already a lot of DirectX based games and online games which can run on top of a Linux/Wine/Cedega platform. Demographically we need to Identify which games are commonly/mostly played in I-cafes here in Cebu, including online games in the likes of Ragna, gunbound, etc. The goal is for the group to provide scripts to ease maintaenance and configuration of these games running in Linux/Wine/Cedega.

One of the things that the group has decided is to host a game fest on an I-cafe running entirely on Linux/Wine/Cedega, the setup is to prove and demonstrate proof of concept that Linux can and is capable of running Windows based games and online games (though not all) - we also need to gather info from gamers (who are not familiar with Linux) on the usability of our setup. We will be inviting i-cafe owners to this event - we still need to identify where and when this can be held, hopefully towards the end of this month.

Other stuff:

Timers/Admin etc applications - There were already several open source apps that cater to these, we just need to choose which one is more appropriate.

guys im from catbalogan samar and interested gyud kaayo sa alternative but lalo man gud ko sa tanan i hop naa pa dyud mo alternative to keep me updated and aware... wala man gud me kagamit sa linux. i have now a copy of fedora core v3 and bayanihan but dli man sad gihapon ko kagamit kay wla man ko xperience sa linux. im planning now to purhase 20win xp home license as my last option ;o( should i go for the license?

di-in ka ha catbalogan ? taga catbalogan man liwat ako... Diri solusyon an paggamit LInux ha tanan na PC mo... Option la iton kung walay kana gud kuwarta, pero kun may kuwarta ka palit nala tanan mabawi mam udog ito.. kay kun linux imo gamiton.. maiha ma set up an mga games diri la madali dali mag set up kailangan ng medyo expert gamay.. ngan ika duwa ok la ba ha imo customer? lalo na yana puro online game karuyag uyagon.. okayy la sana kung tetris or black jack pero kay mga update na game karuyag nira ... ..so my advice go for a windows tanan kung sisiw ha bulsa pero kung medyo gipit half window half linux .... para on going parin business naton.. heheh computer owner manliwat ako dida catbalogan.. adi yana ako ha cebu nag trabaho heheheh .. hino ka pare?? bangin kakilala ta ikaw...

OpenSource has been spreading yes but the spotlight has been focused on other things until now. It has always been there but not everyone has been looking in its direction until the rumors of raids came into the picture.
