    Default Film making anyone?

"Turistang Ahat" is a breakthrough in terms of local documentary production. Shot in its entirety in the US, its production value can be compared to the works of Michael Moore and other reknowned international filmmaker in terms of superb cinematography and appealing visuals. This one is the brainchild of the famed director/writer Mr. Leon C. Villoria who put the finest details for each and every aspect of the production process. Some of Mr. Villoria's works are even aired in the Discovery Channel.

    Jomark,

I believe Leon C. Villoria --- that's a V not a B --- is much lesser than how you idolize him in that piece above this.

The more complete picture of Leon C. Villoria, as far as I knew him, is that he has no money with which to buy books to read. This is why he opted to watch movies instead.

When he did not like the film he did watch, he always thought of making his own, rather than criticized those trashes that came across his way.

But thanks to you anyway for enlarging him.

Default RCTV to showcase the works of Independent Cebuano Filmmakers

A special program of unique storytelling by independent filmmakers SineBuano is slated to start this September on RCTV Channel 36.

Ushering this program is “Utong,” a series of three short features by Gerald Yuvallos, Jurly Maloloy-on and Jerome Satorre and the Washington DC episode of Leon C. Villoria’s “Turistang Ahat.”

“Utong” explores the mind of an individual in crisis and visualizes his surreal experience with jagged edge camera interpretation. This short feature is woven around one storyline but is pursued in three different endings, all based on the filmmakers’ responses to the situation. Future episodes include Maloloy-on’s “Ako” and “Metyors,” both animation of futuristic scenarios; a sensitive portrayal of “Colon” life by Yuvallos; and “Tamatis” by Satorre looking deeply into adolescence.

The first episode of Villoria, “Tuyok-tuyok sa Washington DC,” tells the beginning of the travels of Melyang, a laundrywoman who dreamt to see places of her dreams. This episode is to be followed by “Gitakigan sa New York,” “Bagdoy-bagdoy Wa Dyamo sa San Francisco,” and “Sa Honolulu, Maayong Pagka-tigbak Hasta ang Bun-og nga Sensiyo.” Now in post-production, Melyang will also be seen in future episodes donning her best as she brushed elbows with the rich and famous in the farewell performance of Miss Saigon; running away from a police dispersal in an anti-World Bank demonstration into which she went astray; and discussing with the intellectuals of the Hoover Institution for the Study of War and Peace at Stanford University on the privatization of the justice system in the US.

SineBuano is a group of Cebuano/Visayan independent filmmakers. It is the vision of this group to be able to contribute to the motivation necessary in the revival of the Cebuano/Visayan film industry. “This is not a journey back to a wasted nostalgia,” Yuvallos said, “but an actual re-enactment of the collective recollection that once there was this Cebuano/Visayan industry, in which hope was abundant and seemingly enduring.”

SineBuano filmmakers are not only serious in their desire to embrace filmmaking as a shift from their present careers. They are also in constant learning and rehearsals to perfect their creative craft and have fully armed themselves with state-of-the-art digital film production equipment.

The first season of this joint RCTV/Ch36-SineBuano venture is expected to last six months.

Actually, the real purpose of the show is to entice Cebuano indie filmmakers to submit their works for showing. The group's main aim is to provide a venue or means for budding filmmaker (like us) to show his/her craft. So if you have a piece (a short film) just submit the same to the group and will have it screened/shown.

And so to speak, we are calling all indie filmmaker to submit their works for screening. In this way, we are taking the first step in molding the cultural landscape of Cebu through digital filmmaking, whatever you call it.

As creative director of this project, please know that unsolicited submission will have to undergo a pre-screening process, for certain minimum standards e.g. 15-20 minute pieces; 4:3 aspect ratio; no slur; etc. The pre-screening is subject to the group's unanimous approval, with the proponent participating in the process.

Better still, submit a short, one-page concept design prior to actual production. SineBuano might yet be able to assist you in terms of sending you production and post-production gears. Plus crewing. SineBuano does not respond to pre-production and/or production funding proposals. But admitted unsolicited submissions share in the income of broadcast materials (this is still being worked out right now).

Modesty aside, SineBuano might not be able to compete with giants like Roadrunner Network, Video Post and BigFoot in terms of production and post-production gears. But it might interest you to know that, small as they are, they are closing in. But what SineBuano can compete with these giants is that they are all technically competent. Talking, for example, of three- or four-green screen media --- this is peanuts so to speak.

    What is "Independent Filmmaking?"

In SineBuano's language, "independent filmmaking" is that which is low-budget, small crew (not more than six, including the post-people), non-formulaic "deus ex-machina" stories, provocative, even erotic and serves a purpose larger than life. It can be a documentary, narrative shorts, animation, graphic arts, stop-motion photography, special effects exercises, and studies.

The whole day today, from 10:00 A.M. upwards, you will see SineBuano people doing a shoot in Colon Street, with Gerald Yuvallos directing "Colon."

"Colon" is a study of Colon life. In the apparent smallness of these lives, SineBuano is probing a little more deeply into the humanity of it all, in the dog-eat-dog struggle for survival, and in the little meanings each Colon character embraces his/her hope for a better quality of life. The project may yet find mind-boggling eroticism in the imagination and stories told by "goat's eye" vendors or in the meaningful dare often exhibited by "street dentists" and "street dental patients."

Meet us there today and have fun. Oh, yes, if you can bring us a burger or two, we will definitely be gracious for such kindness.
