agree ko ani...its not my style to quote from books in the hope that quoting from the bible makes your arguments solid and irrefutable. ( besides dili man sad ko christian so moot and academic na xa nga point). id rather describe my opinion thru examples. theres nothing wrong with using metaphors, so here goes:
if our "Works or actions" is a bicycle: faith is the wheel in the rear- the one attached to the pedal...it moves you forward...the front wheel is knowledge. therefore faith motivates you to act, to move forward...knowledge guides you to the right direction to go to., the right actions. if the rear wheel doesnt turn, your actions cannot move forward. without the front wheel pointng the direction, the your actions may not be correct. so knowledge is also important so that your actions are guided.
so without faith, there will be no works. otherwise, your actions will not be sincere. like going to prayer or giving alms so that people will see you. that is the right work, but without faith it is dead.
knowledge, without faith, is also useless. you might know what is the right kind of work because you're knowledgeable- full of reason and understanding...but without faith you might not choose the right path.
therefore faith is the prerequisite for good works. but if you ask me, what will save us: faith or works? my answer is neither. you see, only God's mercy and grace can save us. ( were talking about spiritual salvation here, right?) Without God's mercy, and we rely purely on the merits of our faith and works, then we are all hopeless. if we weigh our works against the weight of our sins....none of us deserved to be saved.
For example, your child is dying and you have no other source of money except a loan with interest. will you rather rely on faith and pray that your child be saved without medicine? will you rely on faith and hope that someone will donate medicine? i don't thnk so. most parents will go for the loan- dspite knowing that usury is forbidden by God.
another example, a church needs repair. and a wealthy politician who is rumored to be corrupt donates money to the church. you think the religious leaders will turn away the money? if such a politician organizes a banquet, do you think the pious will refrain from eating on his table because the food may be tainted with being stolen?
or an a man and his family is kidnapped by criminals...the leader threatens to shoot him or his wife and kids unless he kneels and bows down to the criminal...do you think a man will refuse to obey...despite knowing that the first commandment is that Worship your GOd and none other..?
will a man refuse and say: "I have faith. I will not bow down to you because I believe that only God gives life and only God takes it away. God is my saviour and not you. God will save the life of my family and not you." Really, you say that to a man who has a gun pushed against your child\s head and a knife against your wife;s throat?
These are just examples, to describe how weak our faith is, and weaker still are our works. neither one nor both will save us. ONly God's mercy and grace will. Because God is merciful, and He understands man's weakness.
\\hows that? hahaha--
Diba? hows that?
para nako u should have the two, the faith and work...
only you can save your self.
Luke 23:40-44
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[a]”
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
now question.... ni naug bah ang criminal para mo himog good works aron ma save?
