The University of the Visayas Baby Lancers proved they are made of steely stuff after snatching a win from the jaws of defeat by outlasting the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 96-91 in a double-overtime yesterday in the juniors division of the 2011 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
With the top seed in the semifinal round at stake, the two proud schools gave it their all and it showed as several key players were not able to finish the game due to cramps. In the end, it was the Baby Lancers who remained standing, thanks to their resiliency and the heroics of rookie wingman, Paul Desiderio.
The Magis Eagles were at the cusp of victory as they led, 71-66, in regulation behind an 8-0 run that pulled them out of a 63-66 deficit. However, Desiderio completed a three-point play to pull UV within two, 69-71, with 17 seconds remaining. Ateneo’s Patrick Go split his charities on their offensive and UV took advantage with Nelson Peralta slicing the deficit down to one with a coast-to-coast lay-up.
Then, Ron Dennison stole Ateneo’s inbound pass and was fouled while going for the lay-up. He could have won the game outright but made just one free-throw to send the game to overtime.
The same sob story surfaced for the Magis Eagles in the extension as they once again led at, 83-80 after two freebies by Mark Segador with 10.6 seconds left. But Desiderio again lifted the Baby Lancers as he collared the loose ball, stepped behind the three-point arc in the corner and promptly hit the equalizer with 0.4 of a second left to send the match to another extension.
Desiderio continued his incredible performance by hitting two free-throws and a three-point play to put his team ahead, 92-85, with 2:52 remaining.
The Magis Eagles responded with six straight points, four from Dawn Ochea and a floater down the middle by Henry Asilum, to once again come to within one, 91-92, with 54 seconds left.
Dennison hit a free-throw on UV’s next possession to put them up by two before Ateneo hammered the nail on their own coffin as Asilum dribbled the ball out of bounds with 13 remaining on the clock. King delos Santos and Desiderio added free-throws down the stretch to seal the crucial victory.
Desiderio had 34 points in leading UV to their 14th win in 15 games. Sacred Heart fell to 12-2 and was paced by the 23 of Ochea. The Magis Eagles must now win over defending champions Cebu Eastern College Dragons on Tuesday to secure the second seed and the last twice-to-beat bonus.
CEC beat the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildkittens, 79-68 for their 12th win in 15 matches while the University of Cebu tripped the University of San Carlos, 79-74, in the day’s other juniors games.

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles secured themselves the second seed and the all-important twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals as they rallied past the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 82-81, in double overtime of the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
It was the same story for the Eagles but a different result from their 91-96 double overtime loss to the University of the Visayas Baby Lancers last Saturday, which cost them the number one seed in the semifinal round.
It was nearly déjà vu for Ateneo, as they were headed for another heartbreaking loss if not for the last four points that was scored by Julius Cadavis, including the game-winning free-throws.
The loss gave CEC a 12-4 (win-loss) record at the end of the elimination round, which relegated the reigning champions to the third seed in the playoffs. They will face the same Magis Eagles squad starting next week.
For a while, it appeared that CEC was headed for the easy win as they established their biggest lead of the game at 13, 59-46, after a three-pointer by Marvin Bauya with 7:33 left.
But much like their first encounter in the first round, the Magis Eagles came fighting back and tied the game at 61-all with a sizzling 15-2 run capped off by a turnaround jumper by Cadavis with 1:01 left.
CEC’s Lyle Sumayang gave the lead back to his team with two free-throws but Ateneo tied the game and sent it to overtime from a freethrow each by Cadavis and Dawn Ochea.
CEC’s Alfred Sedillo hit a pressure-packed trey from the corner to once again send the match to another five-minute session.
In the second overtime, Cadavis donned the hero’s cape as he hit a freethrow jumper and then converted two freebies with 10.6 seconds to push the Eagles in front for good, 82-81.

Olsen’s boys are ready

DESPITE the absence of some key players, coach Olsen Racela said the national youth basketball team will be ready for battle in the Second International Basketball Federation (Fiba)-Asia U-16 Men’s Championships from October 18 to 28 in Nha Trang City, Vietnam.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) schedules have forced nationals Gelo Vito, Radge Tongco, Gboy Babilonia and Arvin Tolentino to skip the tournament.
Tolentino of San Beda was the best performer in the Southeast Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) Under-16 tournament with averages of 19.5 points and eight rebounds, while Vito of La Salle Greenhills led the Philippines to a title sweep of the regional qualifier in Malaysia in August.
“Right now, we are playing without our four NCAA players so the other guys have to step up. We have to work even harder as a team,” Racela said during a tune-up game at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.
That leaves the Energen Philippine Youth Team with J-Jay Alejandro, Henry Asilum, Hubert Cani, Andrei Caracut, Nic Dalafu, Rev Diputado, Issac Go, Jordan Heading, Jay Javelosa, Kyles Lao, Earl Murphy, Daryl Pascual, Tomas Ramos and Prince Rivero to carry the fight for the country.
Racela said the team’s quickness will be their best weapon in the tournament.
“We are a lot quicker when we play against taller opponents. So all our plays, as well as offensive and defensive patterns, are based on our quickness,” Racela said. He added that he has also cautioned his players about being complacent after sweeping all four Seaba U16 games against Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore to capture the crown.
“I always tell the boys not to be contented with the Seaba win. There is still a lot of room for improvement,” Racela said.
