manual is best if you know how the settings/controls work, dialing it in. but short of time as it is for you right now, i'd say start w the P mode & adj the exposure control for highlights ( - side) so can have keepers/good snaps of this event for the meantime. i wish you already know the iso performance of your camera so you be the judge on high you should go. i mostly won't go higher than 200 but for print you can probably get away w 400 (noise wise). i suggest center-weighted metering also.
flash is great help, know its reach; utilize bounce & use of diffuser. hopefully you're near enough for it to be useful.
if time/chance permits, play around in M mode ( check the suggestions in your other post ). i hope that helps.
