A Rottweiler is a dog breed that was originated in Germany. The Rottweiler has been used for many different purposes including herding, beasts of burden such as carrying wood and other products to market, draft animals to pull carts filled with products for their owners, guard dogs during World War I and II and currently the Rottweiler is mostly used for guard dogs and police dogs. The Rottweiler has a bad reputation for being a mean and vicious dog. Rottweiler's can also be great companion dogs when in the hands of caring and responsible owners.
The Rottweiler breed can be traced back to the Roman Empire. At this time the Rottweiler was mainly used to herd cattle as the legions were traveling. The Rottweiler is thought to have been named for a market town in Germany called Rottweil. The main ancestors of the Rottweiler are thought to be the Roman War dog and the dogs that came from England or the Netherlands with a molosser or sturdy build. The Rottweiler decreased in popularity towards the end of the 19th Century in the little Market town of Rottweil. It is believed that there was only one female dog alive at this time. The dogs became more popular when police dogs were needed for World War I. The dog became officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935.
The Rottweiler is a huge and massive yet powerful dog. A Rottweiler can weigh anywhere between seventy five and 130 pounds. They can be as tall as twenty eight inches and can live for an average of eleven years. They have dark, orangey looking eyes with triangular ears and a docked tail. The Rottweiler is mostly black with tan markings around the muzzle, chest, legs and eyebrows. The fur on a Rottweiler is medium length with an undercoat that is waterproof. The fur of a Rottweiler is low maintenance with some seasonal shedding. The Rottweiler has the strongest bite of any dog breed.
The temperament of a Rottweiler is mostly misunderstood. The Rottweiler is a reliable, alert and loving companion if raised in the hands of a responsible owner. A well trained Rottweiler can be just as docile and nice as any other dog. Training the Rottweiler properly includes socializing the dog as much as possible with other dogs and people including children. A well socialized Rottweiler is very good with kids. They can be great guard dogs for your children when trained properly. The Rottweiler is quick to learn and eager to please. A Rottweiler can also be very devoted to their owner. A Rottweiler is a steady and self-assured dog breed.
A Rottweiler that is not trained properly will become vicious and try to assert its dominance. A poorly trained Rottweiler can be extremely aggressive and destructive. The large size and strength of this dog breed can make it very dangerous. The Rottweiler likes to be shown attention or they may become destructive in order to gain that attention.
The Rottweiler is the number two dog for fatal human attacks. This is mostly due to bad care and training. The Rottweiler has breeding instincts for guarding so most cases of Rottweiler attacks are due to this instinct. The dogs are only doing what is natural to them but humans can trigger a guarding effect if not careful. Rottweilers have been banned from some countries and municipalities with muzzle and leash laws effective in other countries.
The Rottweiler can be a good family or companion dog if treated well and trained correctly. A Rottweiler is best used as a guard dog for police or military. The Rottweiler is a sturdy and dependable dog if taken care of. The Rottweiler will turn mean and aggressive if treated the same way. If looking at getting Rottweiler you may want to look at your local codes and laws for owning one.
