MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has no specific rule regarding Rico Maierhofer’s “shoe-palpal” move during Barako Bull’s game with San Miguel Beer on Wednesday.
Basketball fans were amused when Maierhofer used his shoe to deny San Miguel’s Gabby Espinas from shooting or passing the ball.
Despite the move, Maierhofer was able to get away without an immediate call from the referees.
PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial told Richard Dy of sports website Spin that they have no clear guideline on how to rule on such tactic.
“Wala sa rule book eh. Siguro okay din kapag i-technical o hindi,” he said.
But Marcial said the league will probably tackle the matter at the tournament committee.
“Baka sa susunud na tournament committee, ibi-bring up iyan or before the start of season, kailangan gumawa ng rule changes, baka ma-tackle,” he said. “Pero malay natin, sa board ma-tackle din, pero sa ngayon, di pa natin masabi.”
During their 116-113 loss to San Miguel Beer on Wednesday’s PBA Governors’ Cup, Maierhofer lost his right shoe while attempting to make a shot.
But since San Miguel was allowed to continue the play in transition, the 6-foot-5 former De La Salle University Green Archer was forced to play on carrying his shoe.
He used it to swat the ball from San Miguel’s Gabby Espinas who was either attempting a shot or trying to pass the ball to a team mate while underneath the basket. The Beermen lost the ball, resulting in a basket at the other end of the court.
Maierhofer was summoned to the PBA office on Thursday to explain why he used his shoe to deny Espinas.
The league has yet to issue an official ruling on what has now been termed as a "shoe-palpal" move.
