CESAFI updates

The CESAFI 2010 basketball season wraps up its elimination round today, and as all teams prepare for the more crucial and upcoming playoffs, the tournament has so far proven to be an interesting one from a number angles. There have been surprises, and the usual expected items.
For starters, the collegiate division has been a case of the expected with UV dominating the lot with an unbeaten run. The surprise here is that they’re doing this without Greg Slaughter. Just when many thought that UV would crumble with the departure of its prized Fil-Am recruit, it seems to have gotten stronger. The main difference this year is that there are no real superstars on the team and the Lancers are relying on team ball with everyone stepping up to contribute. On the other hand, the UC Webmasters have maintained their role as bridesmaid to UV for yet another year despite the presence of Junemar Fajardo. Fans were expecting UC to have an easy ride to the top with Fajardo at the helm, but UV has been the big obstacle along the way. But then again, it isn’t over til it’s over. The playoffs is a and different story where everything goes back to zero.
Then we have the case of the hardluck crew of USC. Down to only a handful of players after some were declared ineligible to play, the Warriors have turned this situation into an opportunity to wake up and win games. They’ve become instant celebrities in the press just for being undermanned and seen to be an underdog each time they take to the court. They’ve won games that they expected to lose through sheer courage and heart. But how far will courage and luck take them? There’ll surely be an end of the road somewhere in the name of UV and UC.
The talk of the town in the CESAFI these days albeit on a smaller scale are the surprises in the high school or juniors division. If you look at the team standings at the end of the elimination round, you can’t help but notice that there’s a weird set of initials in first place. For the first time in CESAFI and CAAA history, Cebu Eastern College (CEC) sits on top of the pile with a 6-1 record that could become 7-1 if they won yesterday. Yes, this is the same CEC that was crushed by the traditional powers of basketball through all these years. The once trampled upon weakling Dragons are now real menacing Dragons who have been the wonder of the tournament. Although they lost to UV, they’ve proven that they could match up with the entire league and could find themselves in the championship unless something weird happens.
Another surprise this year has been the run of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), another school that used to be whipping boys when they were in the CAAA in the 90’s before rejoining the CESAFI last year. After a 4-5 record in their debut season, they’re now at 5-2 and could end their elimination round at 6-2 if they won over USJR yesterday. More importantly, their season will surely be highlighted by their upset win over UV last Thursday, 78-63. Although not considered as a serious title contender, the Magis Eagles have suddenly become a darkhorse team who could be playing the spoiler’s role this year.
If CEC and SHS-AdC turned things around after a year, last year’s champion and runner-up have likewise done the same, but the other way around. Defending champion CIT, now CIT-U, and USJR find themselves lodged at 6th to 7th places after having had Cinderella runs to the top in 2009. In a simple case of losing most of its core players, both teams suffered from manpower build-up issues that hampered their performances this year.
But just like the collegiate division, there’s still a long way to go, and this is where the likes of UV and UC will rely on their experience and history of excellence to prove that they’re still the top dogs of high school basketball. We must all remember that UV and UC were predicted to face each other in the finals last year, but CIT and USJR had something else in mind and scored upsets against the traditional high school powerhouses. I’m sure UV and UC miss being in the spotlight and will go all out to make it back to the finals again. The big question is if the same thing happens this year? Will we see CEC and SHS-
AdC bring down UV and UC this year? Abangan!
That has been the CESAFI so far. It has been a UV and UC show in the collegiate division, but the high school scene has seen a few surprises with CEC and SHS-AdC crowding UV and UC for attention.
