Players improve during the course of their careers. Opportunity,Team,Coaching,System etc. are also big factors.
NBA teams are drafting the current version of these players and not their freshman version. College game is also very restrictive compared to the pace and space style of the pro game. Thats why Russell Westbrook exploded into the NBA bec. his game is more suited for the NBA.
Using 1st year college stats is very unreliable, its not even a good barometer for gauging a players potential for stardom
Draymond Green 1st year stats
3.3 PPG 3.3 RPG 0.8 APG 0.6 SPG 0.2 BPG
Damian Lillard 1st year stats
11.5 PPG 3.9 RPG 2.9 APG 1.1 SPG 0.2 BPG
Russell Westbrook 1st yr stats
3.4 PPG 0.8 RPG 0.7 APG 0.4 SPG 0 BPG
Jimmy Butler 1st yr stats
5.6 PPG 3.9RPG 0.7 APG 0.5 SPG 0.5 BPG
These are just a few examples, I can name a lot more (Olajuwon,Pippen,Drummond,Kawhi etc.)
The point is, potential is overrated. Potential is just potential until a player reaches the expectations or even surpass them.
As of now, id rather have Dunn who has shown a body of work to improve over the course of his career than DAR who has regressed when he entered the NBA.
If DAR becomes a superstar down the line, ill gladly admit im wrong. if that ever happens, I hope he is still with LA LA land.
