the point is, if for example the lakers have acquired three all star players this off-season, and they are on their way to a 40-50 win season... however they still weren't good enough to reach the conference finals. would you still support jeanie if she decides to fire jim and mitch because the team did not reach the ultimatum?
jeanie is a very emotional owner... she has indicated that she leaves the basketball operations to make basketball decisions, but i doubt if she is completely hands off in those decisions. in her book she admitted to being upset because the lakers did not hire phil back... (i have to admit, i was also upset with that decision) her being upset means that the basketball operations is not totally independent. it means that they make decisions, for as long as it doesn't conflict her emotions.
now there are rumors that jeanie wants byron to stay so that the team will suck again next season, and so she could bring phil back to the lakers. i don't want this to happen. this will be a disaster to the team.
as per magic johnson, he should not get in the way of the lakers basketball operations. i think magic has a hand in the hiring of byron scott... when d'antoni was still the coach, he keeps on criticizing jim buss, and d'antoni. now that byron is the coach, even if the team has worsed record in franchise history (with 17 wins) as compared to the time of d'antoni, he is very quite.. he doesn't even criticize jim buss anymore. he doesn't criticize byron... the way i see it, it was through his influence that byron was hired as the head coach.
