SAYANG.... si Pessumal, champion na. Si Tallo, bangko gihapon and La Salle where he is allegedly now enrolled is not going anywhere next year. It is not strong enough to beat UST ... it won't be strong enough to beat NU. So tinuod jud diay ang saying... haste makes waste. KALUOY sa bata.

CESAFI HOOPLA Lancers pull past Warriors
By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated October 01, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers survived the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in a close 54-50 victory last Thursday of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Association, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

    Games Saturday (Cebu Coliseum)

1 pm CIT-U vs. UC (Jrs.) CIT won
2:30 pm UV vs. USJR (Jrs.) UV won
4 pm DBTC vs. USPF (Jrs.) USPF won
5:30 pm USJR vs. SWU (Srs.) SWU won

The Lancers had to fend off the Warriors many times by playing good defense.

UV may have led all the way, but struggled in the third canto where the Warriors outscored them, 8-13, and was up by five at the end of the period, 42-37.

Sam Hermosa took the scoring cudgels for the Warriors in an impressive third period while Edrian Lao scored six of the Lancers' eight points in the third while the other two came from playmaker John Michael Abad.

In the final quarter, a jumper by rookie Vincent Mendoza matched the Lancers' biggest lead at 10 points, 47-37 but the Warriors retaliated with a dashing 12-2 run to tie the count at 49-all on a crucial tip-in by Giovanni Padillo still 2:10 left in the ballgame that awakened the sparse crowd of USC faithful.

UV regained some composure, but later, split charities by guard Nilton John Otida brought the Warriors back to contention with just a hairline deficit, 50-51 down to the final one minute of the contest.

Prior to that, Otida missed a hard drive that could have tied the game and would have given them the lead with a bonus.

Abad answered with his own two free throws and the Lancers had a 53-50 lead just 46.4 seconds left and after two missed charities by Cid Cortes, the struggling Michael Cantonao also missed a potential knot-tying treble and the Lancers heaved a sigh of relief.

The victory was the Lancers' 6th in eight games, while the Warriors who are still alive in the race for the top four slot, fell to 6-4 win-loss record.

Lao, one of the consistent scorers for the Lancers, finished with 14 points and Mendoza added 10 markers.

Hermosa top scored for the Warriors with 16 points while his usual back-up, Cantonao, made only two points.

Padillo and Cid Cortes chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

    The scores:

    UV (54) -- Lao 14, Mendoza 10, Silva 9, Cincoflores 9, Mercader 6, Abad 4, Perolino 2
    USC (50) -- Hermosa 16, Padillo 11, Cortes 10, Otida 5, Codilla 4, Cantonao 2, Panerio 2

    Halftime: 34-24 (FREEMAN)

The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers took care of business and caught up with the league-leading Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles as they defeated the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 85-71, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. juniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The cat-and-mouse game continues between the two league powerhouse squads UV tied SHS-AdC at top with similar 12-1 (win-loss) records.

Five players reached twin digits for the Baby Lancers led by the 18 of Ron Dennison, the 12 of Matthew Oche, the 11 apiece of Nelson Peralta and Paul Desiderio and the 10 of Reeve Ugsang. USJ-R’s stand was led by the 29 of Ricky Cuyos. USJ-R fell to 4-9.

Cobras clobber Jaguars By Gabby G. Malagar (The Freeman) Updated October 03, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)

CEBU, Philippines - Lanky forward Rene Pacquiao pumped in 12 of his topscoring 28 points in the fourth period and 6-foot-6 Cameroonian center Justin Aboude added 22 points as they powered the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras to a 94-75 rout of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars in last Saturday's lone collegiate match of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

Bonifacio Guillena, Jr. and Eleazar Armecin connived with 23 markers for the Cobras, whose largest lead of 19 points turned out to be the final outcome of the match.

USJ-R's David Cinco will sit out in their game against the CIT-U Wildcats tomorrow as he was ejected in the final 1:18 of the contest for swinging his elbow against Armecin, who had been a victim of a physical and pesky defense by the Jaguars all night long.

A little miracle showed up for the Jaguars when they tasted the lead for about 13 seconds courtesy of a basket by Midjet dela Rama, 43-42, with still 7:33 left in the third period.

The Cobras quickly regained the upperhand for good, 44-43, on Pacquiao's basket.

The Cobras, thus, extended their winning run in the second round to three games in a row. Overall, they sport a 6-3 win-loss record.

Jason Olbedado, whose eight points in the third period helped the Jaguars keep their heads above water, finished with 23 points. Abulaiz Suliman and De la Rama combined for 31 points but their efforts went for naught as the Jaguars fell to 2-9.

    The scores

    SWU (94) - Pacquiao 28, Aboude 22, Armecin 12, Guillena 11, Bregondo 9, Nalos 5, Ortuyo 5, Arong 2

    USJ-R (75) - Olbedado 23, Suliman 16, Dela Rama 15, Sanchez 10, Tabaloc 6, Cinco 2, Lajato 2, Frioco 1 Halftime: 40-34. - THE FREEMAN
