Spurs drag Parker back for exam

    By Mike Monroe - Express-News

Protecting their six-year, $66 million investment in Tony Parker, the Spurs on Friday summoned their point guard back to San Antonio so their medical staff can examine injuries Parker suffered a week ago in France.

Parker has been training with and competing forLes Bleus, the French national team, as they prepare for a six-team tournament that will determine the final qualifier for the European championships. The Eurobasket tournament is in Poland in September.

Parker collided with an Austrian player in a game in Strasbourg, France, on July 23, leaving the court on crutches after injuring both his right thigh and ankle. An MRI exam showed no ligament damage, but the Spurs this week requested Parker's return so they could perform their own tests.

Spurs general manager R.C. Buford, responding by text message to a question about the need for Parker to return to San Antonio, said the Spurs were “being cautious” with the three-time NBA All-Star, who led the Spurs in scoring in both the regular season (22.0 points per game) and playoffs (28.6).

Pointing out that the French team does not play again until Wednesday, when it takes on Italy as part of the Eurobasket play-in tournament, Buford said the tests, scheduled for today, will let the Spurs “know what we're dealing with.”

In a media release issued by the French team, Parker was quoted as saying he did not understand the Spurs' insistence that he return to San Antonio. Noting that a representative of the Spurs' training staff had been on the scene in France this week, he said he didn't like having to leave the national team.

“Honestly, I don't understand this decision, because of all the tests done with the French doctors and the Spurs,” Parker was quoted in the release. “I regret what is going on.

“I am obligated to follow what my (NBA) club wants me to do, but I hope to come back (to France) as soon as possible to participate in the qualification with the French national team.”

Parker has had previous ankle injuries, adding to the Spurs' concerns. In the summer of 2007, he sprained his left ankle while training with the French team, missing most of the preseason. He missed 13 regular-season games in 2007-08, all because of left ankle problems.

Last season, he sat out nine games over three weeks after suffering a sprained left ankle in the fifth game of the regular season, against Miami.

The 27-year-old guard has been relatively durable in his eight NBA seasons, playing 612 of 656 regular-season games.

What if Parker is really okay and San Antonio’s doctors come to the same conclusions as the French doctors? If France struggles without Parker and fails to qualify for play in September, will Parker hold a grudge against San Antonio for sabotaging the aspirations of his national team?

Finally, intrigue is in the house.

    Oh, Jefferson's runaway-groom act was no.1.

    More Bowen news...

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    By Tim MacMahon

I ran into ex-Spur Bruce Bowen, a huge Cowboys fan, at training camp in the Alamodome and picked his brain a bit about the Mavs' off-season.

He really likes the deal to bring in Shawn Marion, saying MFFLs would "see something special" from the Matrix since he's playing again with a passing whiz of a point guard who can get the transition game going. Bowen thought the additions of Drew Gooden and Tim Thomas could help.

But Bowen wasn't aware that Gooden, whom he said struggled to learn the Spurs' system after a late-season arrival in San Antonio, would be logging heavy minutes at center.

"Center? Drew?! Wow," Bowen said with raised eyebrows. "That's a tall order. That'll be interesting."

While the Mavs don't envision Gooden battling elite post scorers too often, Bowen questions whether Gooden can handle the dirty-work duties of manning the middle.

"He can score on the block, but there's more to it than scoring," Bowen said. "You guys have Dirk. Dirk's going to put the ball in the hole. What else is someone going to do to better enhance the team?"

    Tony Parker Injury Update

Tony Parker was examined earlier today by the Spurs medical staff. The examination confirms that he has a mild sprain of his right ankle.
Parker will begin his rehabilitation process in San Antonio before rejoining the French National Team next week. He will not be with the team on Wednesday when France faces Italy in an additional qualifying round game in the 2009 Euroleague Championship. A timeline for Parker's return will be determined based on how he responds to his rehabilitation program.

"We want to thank Tony for returning to San Antonio to allow our medical staff examine him," said Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford. "It shows his maturity and his dedication to the Spurs organization."

While some people clearly do appreciate his contribution to the team's past successes, I wouldn't use "ungrateful" here. You have to remember that this is still a business; Bowen knows and acknowledges this, and the goal is to win the 'ship. If he isn't contributing, then there's no reason to extend his contract. And yes, he was paid when he played here; it wasn't like he was playing for free.

    HOOPSWORLD

As HOOPSWORLD's newest writer, I offer my opinion knowing some readers may be compelled to rip my rankings to shreds….but I can take it. I think. I know how personally diehard fans like us take criticism or what appears to be lack of respect toward our teams. Just understand that this is not a prediction of how the season's going to end up, simply a fun list as I see it right now, to spark some spirited debate. Remember, the goal here is to have fun!

    1. San Antonio Spurs: Being eliminated in the first round last season did not sit well with General Manager RC Buford. Instead of saving cap space, the Spurs are concentrating on a "right now" scenario, cognizant that Tim Duncan's days are numbered. Athletic wingman Richard Jefferson should contribute significantly on both ends and relieve some pressure off Ginobili, who will reportedly be 100% by the start of training camp. Veteran Antonio McDyess, who averaged 9.8 rebounds last year, will slide in nicely. McDyess and No. 37 draft pick DeJuan Blair (aka, The Steal) will provide major help in the paint. ACLs or not, I see a great future in energetic, tough Blair. Pop gets to play I-told-you-so with Tony Parker's recent overseas injury, but he'll be fine. The likely starting five is ridiculously strong, and the bench is deep. The only concern is keeping everyone healthy, but couldn't that be said for every team?

    2. Los Angeles Lakers: Lakers fans, put away your swords. Yes, I realize Lamar Odom is coming back. Adding Ron Artest obviously brings tough defense and help for Kobe's shots, but forgive me for stating the obvious…um, chemistry? One should not underestimate the importance of it. Phil Jackson will handle that, some say. Do they become complacent now that they have the ring? What about Andrew Bynum? It's hard to forget the significant contributions that Trevor Ariza made in the playoffs (47.6% 3-pointers/ 49.7% overall, strong defense and offensive sparks). OK, the following questions should really incite the crowd: How do the Lakers fare in a Finals with either of last year's top two Eastern Conference seeds, Celtics (with a healthy Garnett) or Cavs? Did they get a break by facing No. 3 Magic last season? Obviously this team remains top-tier with such an abundance of talent.
