China to PHL: Cease all provocations, show sincerity
China on Thursday ignored the Philippines' call for it to withdraw from the Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal and instead urged Filipino officials to show "sincerity" in resolving the month-old row diplomatically.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei claimed the Philippines' "provocative actions" in the area prompted China to beef up its presence there.
"We again urge the Philippines to seriously respect China's territory sovereignty, cease all their provocations, and show its sincerity of making serious diplomatic dialogues with China," Hong said in a news article posted Thursday night on the Chinese government's web portal.
The Philippines earlier reported an increase in the number of Chinese ships in the disputed area, and demanded that Chinese vessels withdraw from the area.
The standoff started last April when Philippine authorities spotted Chinese fishermen taking marine species in the area but were blocked by Chinese vessels when they tried to move in and make arrests.
Both sides declared their respective fishing bans in the area earlier this month.
However, Hong reiterated that Huangyan Island - the name it uses to refer to the shoal - is an inherent part of Chinese territory.
Also, he insisted a Philippine warship's "harassment" of Chinese fishermen had singularly caused the incident.
He said China lodged several representations to the Philippine side, urging it to withdraw its ships from the waters in the area.
"China has been trying to resolve the current standoff through diplomatic consultations," he stressed.
But Hong claimed the Philippines has kept taking "provocative actions" in the South China Sea, which it said forced China "to beef up vigilance" in the area.
He said the Philippines' behavior aroused China's suspicion over its sincerity of properly resolving the incident. — ELR, GMA News
