CEBU, Philippines - Defending champion University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters shook off a lackluster start to hack out a lopsided 84-63 victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers and stay unbeaten in nine starts in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.

Like in their previous three games, the Webmasters again experimented on how their second stringers would fare and that resulted to a 15-21 deficit in the first period.
But that did not last long as coach Roel Gomez changed his mind and decided to field in his starting unit led by the 6-foot-9 center Junemar Fajardo.
Fajardo responded to the challenge and led the Webmasters with 25 points.
Top gunner Robinson Mohammad and pesky guard Luigi Bercede also finished in double figures with 14 points each.
The Webmasters, who led by as much as 24 points late in the third quarter off a triple by Bercede, recalled all starters in the final one minute and coach Gomez made a platoon substitution to let his second five finish the contest.
The Panthers, who dropped to 4-5, were led by Earvin Ferraren with 15 points, seven of them in to second period where they waxed hot and allowed the Webmasters to take only a five-point lead at halftimel, 41-36.
Randy Avila and Fritz Dajalos had 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Panthers.
Earlier, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens chalked up their third straight win in the second round after beating the Don Bosco Technology Center (CBTC) Greywolves, 77-69.
Mark Kong fired 24 points and Jeraldvin Delima added 20 markers as the Wildkittens stayed in contention in the semifinal race with a 5-6 win-loss card.
Stephen Niere had 18 points for the 3-9 Greywolves, even as Jose Marlo Pono and Glenn Paul Carbon each scored 11 in a losing effort.

The Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras completed their mission of achieving a rare grandslam after they swept the University of San Carlos (USC) Lady Warriors in the championship game in the seniors division of the 2011 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball tournament at the Aznar Coliseum.
Showing sheer grit and determination in the face of injuries, the Cobras captured a third straight crown with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-8 win over the Lady Warriors at their homecourt.
Danika Gendrauli and the game’s MVP, Princess Pido, were both coming off injuries with the former suffering from fever and the latter just getting discharged from the hospital the other day.
Still, the Lady Cobras made no excuses and marched on to the title, which greatly pleased team manager and SWU athletic director Ryan Aznar.
“I can now rest comfortably. The players’ fighting heat and grittiness enabled them to get this victory. Clearly, they were not playing at full strength but they still made it happen,” said Aznar.
The Lady Cobras are now setting their eyes on the prize in the 2011 University Games, which will be held in Capiz, and the Shakey’s V-League, of which they are expecting an invitation. They are also raring to defend their title in the Cesafi beach volleyball tournament slated for Oct. 4 and 5 at the White Sands Resort in Mactan.
USC’s men’s team salvaged the night as they won the men’s title with a 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 win over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in their championship game.

UV faces UC after long rest | More | By Edri K. Aznar

game in progress as of press time last night, Sunday, September 25
AFTER a long two-week rest, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers brace for its toughest rival in the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. as it faces off with unbeaten defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters tonight at the Cebu Coliseum in a rematch.
UV is looking to avenge its first round 78-67 defeat to UC last month, while the Webmasters are gunning for their 10th straight win this season and the bragging rights of beating the Green Lancers twice in the collegiate basketball tournament.
The Junemar Fajardo-led UC squad has been impressive so far this season with a perfect 9-0 slate and sits at the top of the rankings, while UV possesses a 5-2 record and is at third place.
The UV vs. UC game will be the fourth game tonight at 5:30 p.m.
In other games today, the Don Bosco Technology Center Greywolves (3-10) will take on the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors (2-9) at 1 p.m.; the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers (7-4) will go up against high school division leader Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles (10-1) at 2:30 p.m.; while the UC Baby Webmasters (2-10) will face defending high school division champions Cebu Eastern College Dragons (8-3) in the third match at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, an impressive fourth quarter performance by Ricky Cuyos helped the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars escape with a come-from-behind 78-74 victory over the USC Baby Warriors last night in the high school division at the USC Gym.
Cuyos scored 16 of his 22 points in the final quarter and helped his team overcome USJ-R after trailing, 59-52, at the end of the third.
Roland Hermosilla also added 19 points for the Baby Jaguars, which improved to 5-7 for the fifth spot in the rankings.
Ian Ortega scored 23 for USC, which fell to 2-9 for the second worst record in the league.

Magis Eagles rout Baby Panthers to stay on topBy Jonas Panerio

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles hiked their record up to a league-leading 11-1 (win-loss) after they routed the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 88-72, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
After getting their first taste of defeat last weekend, the Magis Eagles have found their hunger once more and they showed it on both ends of the floor against the Baby Panthers.
They had four players score in twin digits led by Dawn Ochea, who had 25 markers. Another big man, the lanky Mavii Suarez added 16, the same output as guard Aaron Sing while Julius Cadavis chipped in 11.
More importantly, the Magis Eagles showed their mettle on the defensive side of the floor as they held down USPF’s top gun Rommel Diapera to a measly 11-point production. Another one of USPF’s go-to guys, Winston Bolivar, fared even worse against the tough defense of SHS-AdC as he managed just four markers.
In another juniors division game, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors eked past the Don Bosco Greywolves, 90-88.
USC was single-handedly carried by frail but feisty wingman, Ian Ortega, who scored a whopping 37 markers. Marlo Pono and Stephen Nierre combined for 46 points for Don Bosco in a losing cause.
In seniors action the other night, the USC Warriors pushed their record to 6-4 after they defeated the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 72-62.
Mike Cantonao and Sam Hermosa each had 14 to pace the winning squad. Cantonao was deadly from behind the three-point arc as he connected on four in the first half.
breaking news... CEC Dragons defeated the UC Jr. Webmasters last night. While the UC Webmasters are undefeated, their junior counterparts sit at the bottom of the pile.
