Alaska's appeal to nullify Purefoods' 87-86 victory Wednesday was shut down by the PBA Commissioner's Office late Thursday afternoon after a through review of the gametapes.

Alaska placed the game under protest, stressing that the game officials missed two crucial Purefoods violations in the dying seconds that could have given the Aces the victory .

The outcome was like a dagger that pierced through the hearts of coach Tim Cone and his charges, who rallied from a 19-point second quarter deficit and was holding on to a precarious 86-85 lead before the infractions in question transpired with the game clock winding down.

In handing down its decision, the Commissioner's Office specified four requirements that should be met for a protest to be upheld: 1) The filing of a written protest on or before 12 noon of the day following the protested game; 2) The filing of a protest fee of P20,000; 3) There is a technical error on the part of game officials and; 4) The technical error clearly altered the outcome of the game.

Alaska met the first two requirements but failed to prove the last two.

In its letter to PBA vice-chairman and Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo, the Commissioner's Office explained that the jump ball incident in question that occurred with 6.9 seconds is not a technical error.

It said a re-jump had to be called on the ground of a bad toss. The decision to re-jump was clearly a judgment call and coaches of both teams were properly informed.

With regards top the alleged traveling violation committed by Purefoods center Kerby Raymundo, the Commissioner's Office said that it could not be technical in nature.

"The referee involved testified that he did not call a traveling violation on Kerby Raymundo on the assessment that the ball went loose when Raymundo bumped into Alaska's Sonny Thoss. This was his judgment under the circumstances he described, it would be a correct non-call under existing guidelines," the letter said.

The Commissioner's Office explained that under the rule, "an airborne player going towards the basket may not land on either foot without shooting or passing the ball. However, this rule shall apply only to a player with clear possession and control of the basketball. If a defensive player causes the offensive player to lose or fumble the ball, then said offensive player is allowed to land with either foot with the basketball without incurring a traveling violation."

Based on its review of the game tape, the Commissioner Sonny Barrios and his staff found that the contact between Raymundo and Thoss did not result in a clear loose ball. Raymundo retained possession and control of the ball. Barrios said it is his Office’s assessment, which, if correct, a traveling violation could have been called. (DBC)
