CEBU, Philippines - Tournament darkhorse University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers made a strong finishing kick to walk away with an 81-70 victory over the smaller University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters in last night’s high school match-up of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season at the Cebu Coliseum.
Veteran Rommel Diapera had a game-high 31 points to lead the Baby Panthers, who improved their win-loss record to 7-3. Jason Cando was the other Baby Panther who chipped in double figures with 17 points as he helped decide the game with his late points and important rebounds.
The Junior Webmasters outscored the Baby Panthers in the fourth period, 27-16 but the rally came too late and the latter’s defense was easily broken especially by Cando, Diapera and center Winston Bolivar.
They tried to came back but after slicing the gap to just nine points, 66-75, in the final 1:54 of the contest, the Baby Panthers made one strong final push to extend their lead to 16 points, 81-65, before the Junior Webmasters settled to an 11-point loss, their eighth in 10 games.
Andre Armenion topscored for the Junior Webmasters with 18 points and he could have easily scored more than 20 points if he did not foul out inside the two-minute mark of the ballgame.
He had slight offensive backings from Jomari Bacalso and Filbert Almario, who finished with 15 and 10 points, respecitvely.
As of presstime last night, the University of san Carlos (USC) Warriors were still playing against the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats where the former hopes to be back in contention after losing two games in the second round dropping them into a 4-4 win-loss record.

5:15 p.m. – CIT-U vs. DBC (jrs.)
6:45 p.m. – USPF vs. UC (srs.)
JUST AS HE HAS DONE many times this season, veteran gunner Rommel Diapera rose to the occasion to bail out his University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers from the jaws of defeat as they bested the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 81-70, in the juniors division of the CESAFI basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Diapera scored a whopping 31 points. More importantly, he tallied 20 in the second half, which repulsed the many attempts of the Baby Webmasters to come roaring back.
USPF was ahead, 44-32, at halftime and pushed their lead to 14, 60-46, after an 8-0 run anchored on the shotmaking prowess of Diapera.
UC’s shocktroopers gave the team a huge lift as they fueled a blistering 13-0 blast with baskets coming from Matthew Grafilo, Filbert Almario, Kerr Nemil and Noel Villaceran to allow them to come within just one, 59-60, heading to the last period.
But Diapera, who once scored an incredible 55 points two seasons ago, poured in 10 in a 15-2 run that put the game away for the Baby Panthers.
When the dust settled, USPF had established a 75-61 lead, an advantage that was not threatened from thereonend.
Jason Cando helped USPF with 17 points as they improved their record to 5-4 (win-loss). Andrey Armenion paced UC with 18.
Meanwhile, the reigning champions UC Webmasters aim to keep their unbeaten streak going today when they face off against the USPF Panthers in the seniors division.
The juniors class will feature the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens, who are fresh off their stirring conquest of the once-undefeated Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles last Saturday, taking on Don Bosco.

A 9-0 rally in the waning minutes of the ballgame helped the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers escape with a close 70-68 victory over the winless Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats in the collegiate division of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament the other night at the Cebu Coliseum.
After being down by 60-55 with just four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers clawed their way back up to the top by scoring nine unanswered points for a 64-60 lead in the final 2:34 mark.

That capped a comeback that started as early as the first period when USPF’s lost a 16-12 lead and was trailing CIT-U, 32-25, at the end of the half and 44-41 going into the fourth.
With 2:34 to go, Axel Rabaya trimmed the lead to just two points after converting a pair of free throws but USPF answered with four points from a basket by Joseph Sedurifa and two shots from the charity stripe by lanky center Mil Linao for a 68-62.
CIT-U and USPF traded free throws as both were in penalty. Rabay made two free throws and a basket to cut down the lead to just two with 20 ticks left on the clock.
Sedurifa made a crucial mistake and turned the ball over with an errant lob pass that went out of bounds with 12 seconds left.
Chester Curso had a chance to give his team their first victory of the tournament with a three-point shot but he missed badly after his three pointer was contested.
Sedurifa led USPF with 14 points, while Linao and Randy Avila added 11 each. Curso and Rabaya carried the offensive load for CIT-U with 20 and 16 points, respectively.
USPF improved to 4-4 and sits at the fifth spot, while CIT-U is still at the bottom of the heap with a woeful 0-7 record.
In tonight’s games, the USPF Baby Panthers will take on the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters at 5:15 p.m. in the high school division, while the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors face off with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars at 6:45 p.m. in the collegiate division.
USPF is looking to maintain its grasp of the fourth spot in the rankings with a victory over one of the league’s worst teams, UC. USPF holds a 6-4 slate, while UC is 2-8.
USC, on the other hand, will try to bounce back after suffering a 64-72 beating at the hands of the Southwestern University Cobras last Saturday, while USJ-R aims to end its losing skid.
USC is currently fourth in the collegiate division rankings with a 4-4 mark, while USJ-R is 4-7.

When skeds clash BLEACHER TALK By Rico Navarro
(The Freeman) Updated September 18, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (0)
When one is made to choose between country and school team, one is expected to always choose country, right? Well I’m afraid the answer is neither here nor there. It’s actually more like a big NO. But when skeds are ironed out to avoid conflicts among local and international competitions, there isn’t a problem at all.
This in a nutshell is the dilemma that we in the Philippines face every year and yet we still don’t do anything about it. When an international basketball tournament for the youth is held and the Philippines needs to send a team, we can’t send the best players due to conflicts with the mother ballclubs of many players.
One major conflict this year is the FIBA Asia Under 16 basketball tournament which will be held in Vietnam from October 18-28. This is exactly the same time as the playoffs of the NCAA and UAAP high school tournaments, the two biggest leagues of the country. And since most of the Philippine team’s key players are from these leagues, the national team is now in a dilemma. It looks like the schools don’t intend to release their players to play for the national team. These schools are more interested in winning a high school championship and won’t allow any of its players to be absent.
The irony of it all is that a compromise can always be arranged for a win-win situation. While the UAAP and NCAA teams are correct in wanting to win a championship, neither can we say that the Philippine team is wrong in its desire to send the strongest possible team to the tournament. Another irony here is that all the major collegiate leagues are actually members of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the sport’s national sports association (NSA) which is given the role of forming a national team for all the competitions that we join every year.
It’s really all about scheduling. The sad part here is that the Philippines isn’t in synch with the FIBA due to certain circumstances. The schedule of our school-based leagues is in conflict with the international youth tournaments held between the months July and October. But even if this conflict occurs, what the country is asking for is just a matter of ten days of international play. The FIBA Asia U16 tournament won’t eat up the same number of days as an entire NCAA or UAAP season. Can’t the NCAA or UAAP make a little room for this?
At this point, it doesn’t look like the leagues have plans of revising their schedules to accommodate the needs of the national team. Consequently, the teams with players on the national team will not allow them to play for our tri-colors. Talk about youth development and loyalty to the flag? Among those in the heat include NCAA powerhouse San Beda which has four players on the national team (five if we include ex-SHS-Ateneo player Adven Diputado who’s serving his one-year residency). Disclosure: We in Cebu have given the go-signal to Henry Asilum to join the national team even if this means his missing games of his team at the CESAFI (playoffs included). Our school teams, which are supposed to be teaching young kids the value of love for one’s country, are actually telling their players that love for school should prevail over love for country. How can this be right?
The answer is supposed to be a simple no-brainer but some people simply have twisted priorities. If one looks at the ongoing FIBA Qualifier tournaments as an example, one can’t help but notice that the world’s best players are all playing for their country. And these various tournaments are scheduled in such a way that no conflicts are in place. You have Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, the Gasol’s and other European-born NBA players seeing action for their countries in the Eurobasket 2011. Manu Ginobili, Luis Scola and JJ Barea are also playing at the FIBA Americas tournament, again without any conflict of skeds between the FIBA and the NBA. It’s a simple case of one giving way to the other.
Now if they can do it in the big leagues, why can’t we do the same in the youth sector? Why can’t the NCAA be flexible with its sked and adjust for the country? Why do teams consider a high school title more important than playing for the country?
It’s all about win-win. If the local leagues and teams give away for only a short period of time, we can send all the best players available to an international meet and they also get to play in a high school tournament’s playoffs. We don’t embarrass ourselves overseas, thanks to a good performance with a complete team. And more importantly, the high school team can remain intact for its crucial playoff games.
Simple lang, di ba?

USC staves upsetBy Jonas Panerio

LANKY center Robert Codilla rose to the occasion to fire up his University of San Carlos Warriors in avoiding a major upset at the hands of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats, 85-76, in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Codilla, a reserve slotman, scored 14 points in the second half which fueled the Warriors’ fightback from a six-point halftime deficit. Seemingly listless and uninterested, the Warriors were behind, 36-42, but were awaken by the sudden burst of Codilla who tallied six straight points for USC which got them going for a 58-53 lead heading to the final period.
Codilla continued his heroics as his up-and-under scoop shot gave USC back the lead, 70-69, with less than five minutes remaining in the game. He further cemented his impact by swiping the ball on the defensive side and went all the way for a lay-up. Mike Cantonao and Giovanni Padillo then finished the job off with timely hits.
Padillo led USC with 15 points while Sam Hermosa and Cantonao had 13 each. Chester Curso led the Wildcats with 24 points while Floyd Taboada added 16.
The Warriors improved their record to 5-4 while CIT-U remains winless in eight games.
The Wildcats will be hardpressed to claim their first win today when they face off against the Southwestern University Cobras. The juniors division will see the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles try to bounce back from their first loss of the tournament when they take on the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters.
Strong second-half performance saves Warriors from upset; CIT-U still winless in eight games| More | By Edri K. Aznar

ROBERT Codilla isn’t usually the go-to-guy for the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors. But he picked the right time to be a threat in the offensive end as he helped his team escape a near-upset from the worst team in the league, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), with an imposing 14-point second-half performance the other night in the collegiate division of the 11th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. at the Cebu Coliseum.
USC won 85-76 to stay at fourth place with a 5-4 record, while CIT is still winless in eight games.
At halftime, it seemed CIT was headed to end that losing slump as it held a 42-36 lead. However, Codilla, who was held scoreless in the first half, fired up USC’s offense, scoring six points, to help them regain the lead after outscoring the Wildcats 22-11 for a 58-53 advantage.
Chester Curso gave the lead back to CIT-U with a three-point play in the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter but Codilla struck again.
With less than five minutes left on the clock, Codilla scored an up-and-under move for a slim 70-69 lead by USC and then stole the ball and converted a layup for 72-69 lead.
But Curso answered back by sinking his two free throws before June Cantonao scored a basket and Giovanni Padillo sank a crucial three-pointer for a 77-71 USC lead.
Floyd Taboada trimmed the lead to just four with two free throws but Padillo hit back with another shot from beyond the arc to seal the game for USC.
Padillo led USC with 15 points, while Sam Hermosa and Cantonao had 13 each. Curso paced the Wildcats with 24 points, while Taboada had 16.
In today’s games, second-ranked Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles (9-1) face the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters (2-9) at 5:15 p.m. , while the scorching Southwestern University Cobras (5-3) take on CIT-U.
