A force that already needs to be reckoned with just got a little bit more dangerous.

(CESAFI) basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The undermanned Warriors welcomed the return of Padillo, who missed most of the season with a fractured hand. The athletic guard responded by scoring 15 points, six of which came in the third period where USC overhauled a 33-39 deficit and turned it into a 60-51 lead heading into the last canto.

USC improved to 5-2 (win-loss) good for third place behind the University of the Visayas (UV) and the University of Cebu (UC).

Don Bosco, which dropped to 1-5, waxed hot in the first half for a 39-33 lead at the bend.

But the Warriors responded with aplomb in the second half with Padillo and reserve center Robert Codilla combining for 13 points, most of which coming in an 11-2 run that gave them a 60-49 advantage.

The Warriors sealed thw win as they erected their biggest lead of the match at 16, 83-67, behind Mark Panerio and Sam Hermosa.

Joven Cortes led USC with 17 points while Hermosa scored 14 markers.

In high school play, the UV Baby Lancers returned to action after a lengthy hiatus and dominated the DBC Baby Greywolves, 91-74, to improve their record to 4-1.

Vincent Mendoza led UV with 22 points.

The UC Baby Webmasters also registered a victory as they eked past the hard-fighting Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildkittens, 82-79, putting their record up at 5-2. Nico Nemenio stepped up to score 18 points while John Aranas added 15.

Padillo returns, helps USC Warriors log fifth victory in Cesafi basketball
    • On a day when the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons spew more smore than fire, they still had enough firepower down the stretch to rout the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Baby Jaguars, 72-58, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Meanwhile, the nine-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers completed a sweep of the elimination round games as they routed the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 75-57 late Sunday.

The Lancers established their dominance early on and underscored their intentions of taking a 10th straight crown.

Ralf Olivares continued his breakout performance this season as he tallied 17 points to lead UV's balanced attack. Jerome Silva chipped in 10 markers while the Cobras, which fell to an even 3-3, was led by the 22 markers of Rene Pacquiao.

While the Lancers were asserting their supremacy over the rest of the field, the Dragons, on the other hand, had trouble shaking off the pesky Baby Jaguars and had to turn to some timely shots by Roy Villarias, Benjamin Zosa and Lyle Sumayang to secure their sixth win in seven games, good for the best record in the juniors division.

Despite their lowly standings, USJ-R clawed and fought their way all through the match and were down by just six, 41-47, heading into the final canto. The Dragons gained their second win and established a 14-point lead, 57-43, after a 10-0 blast which featured six points by Villarias.

But the Jaguars showed their persistency and cut the lead down to just six, 54-60, after an 11-3 run behind baskets by Neriel Magdali and Rendell Senining.

The Dragons, though, saw just about enough as they closed out the game with a blistering 12-2 run punctuated by back-to-back three-point shots by Villarosa to take the victory.

Sumayang had 24 points to lead the surprising Dragons while Villarias tallied 16. Zosa ended up with 11 points. USJ-R fell to 1-4.

In the other game of the high school division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles soared to their fourth straight win after edging the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors, 85-82.

The Eagles which lost their first two games of the season, improved to 4-2 while USC, fell to 2-4.
