Mavericks fans should appreciate that others can pick up the scoring slack as was the case down the stretch on Thursday night.
Seven players scoring in double figures could be attributed in part to the Houston Rockets' tempo, which has produced one of the league's best offenses. But at least players like J.J. Barea (19 points, following his 25 on Tuesday night) and Tyson Chandler (21, equaling his season high set Tuesday) are able to shoulder the load.
After a 25-point lead was cut to one in the final minute, the Mavs had enough fire to ward off the Rockets.
"There were probably 15, 20 possessions where we needed to be better," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "So we'll keep working toward that. We need everybody to play at a high level, and we need everybody to play better defensively.
"Look, we've got a really good team here. We've just to work at continuing to get better. In those situations where we can build big leads, we're going to try to add to them. We didn't get that done tonight."
Said Jason Terry: "Yeah, you want to blow teams out. But that's not going to happen nine times out of 10 in this league. Teams are going to continue to fight. They've got pride.
"We wanted to bury 'em. [The Mavs] put 'em on the free-throw line there in the first half so we couldn't get away from 'em 'cause they were marching to the line. But for the most part, great effort."
