THE Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras had a dismal start this season, dropping their first two games and finishing the first round in the collegiate division of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. with a mediocre 3-3 record.
However, after a shaky start, the Yayoy Alcoseba-mentored Cobras have finally found their rhythm and are now riding a four-game winning streak after beating the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 72-62, the other night at the Cebu Coliseum.

SWU had a great start in the ballgame and led by 12 points at half-time compliments of the impressive single-quarter performance by back-up point guard Joseph Nalos.
Nalos had 14 points in the second period and led SWU off the bench with a game-high 21 points.
The lead quickly ballooned in the third quarter as SWU outscored USC, 20-14, for an 18-point lead, 56-38, entering the final period.
USC started the fourth with a 7-0 run in the first minute to trim the lead, 56-45. SWU answered with a basket and a free throw for a 59-45 lead but the Warriors battled their way back to cut down the lead to just seven, 59-52, after three unanswered baskets by Jun Cantonao and Sam Hermosa.
However, with 6:17 to go, Rene Pacquiao started a 7-0 rally to increase SWU’s lead to 66-52.
Eleazar Armecin helped Nalos with the offensive load with 16 points, while Cantonao scored 16 for USC.
SWU overtook USC for the third spot with a 5-3 record, while the Warriors were relegated to fourth with 4-4.
Meanwhile, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Green Lancers took the top spot in the high school division after an 84-72 victory over the USC Baby Warriors yesterday.
Four players scored in double figures for UV--Ron Dennison with 24 points, Nelson Peralta and Jino Berdin with 14 each, and Mathew Oche with 11. Ian Ortega, on the other hand, had 21 points in a losing effort for USC.
UV overtook Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu for the No.1 spot with a 10-1 record, while USC sits at the bottom with a 2-8 slate.
University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers also crushed University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 85-66, with another impressive night for Rommel Diapera.
Diapera had 38 points for USPF, while Winston Bolivar added 19 points. Aaron Suson led USJ-R with 15.
USPF remained at the fourth spot with a 6-4 slate, while USJ-R is trailing at fifth with 4-7.
Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves edged out University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 76-75, in a tight contest.
Glenn Carbon and Leix Mellijor scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, for DBTC, while Kurt Trangia had 15 for UC. DBTC is now 3-8, while UC slumped to 2-8.

thanks Sir Gilas. It was an easy decision, the boys and their parents were the ones who were asked to decide. Wala manghilabot ang school ~ wala'y budget to compete against what San Beda can offer. Adven and two others decided to move to San Beda on their own free will. Henry Asilum decided to stay put at SHS AdC and graduate on time.
On a less happy note... finally... napildi na jud ang SHS AdC Magis Eagles. Win streak halted at 9 wins. Nakatilaw na jud ug sakit sa dughan ang mga bata. sobrang kumpiansa, naig-an ug kilat, marisi ~PILDI. Since we would like to look at things from a half full stand point, it was a good loss if there is ever such a thing. The CIT Wildkittens deserved the W. They earned it and deserved it.
Travel budget and practice schedule permitting, Henry may still come home to play every now and then.

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles had their incredible winning streak come to an end in the hands of an opponent nobody thought could achieve the feat.
This as the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens registered the season’s biggest upset, winning over the previously unbeaten Magis Eagles, 71-62, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win dropped the Magis Eagles to 9-1 (win-loss) while the Wildkittens improved to 3-7.
CIT-U appeared intent on swinging the upset axe upon the Magis Eagles from the get-go as they set the tone by leading 20-9 after the first period.
That lead did not last long as Dawn Ochea sparked Ateneo with his 14 first half points to come within just a point, 28-29, at halftime. The Magis Eagles further thickened the plot by tying the game at 47-all heading to the final canto.
However, this was where the Wildkittens sprung the surprise of the tournament as they zoomed away with the lead and eventually the win behind the eight points of Mark Kong as well as contributions from Nikko Otadoy, Kris Lucero and Gerald Delima.
Delima topped CIT-U with 24 markers while Kong ended up with 20. SHS-J was paced by the 18 of Ochea.
In the other games, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons beat the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, 92-76, to improve to 8-3.
The University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters also snatched their second win of the season after defeating the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars, 73-68.

The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras grabbed solo third place in the standings after they defeated the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 72-64, in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament late Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras of head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba now stand at 5-3 (win-loss), slightly behind the undefeated University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and the second-running University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers. The loss dropped USC to an even 4-4.
In juniors action yesterday, Don Bosco edged the UC Baby Webmasters, 76-75, thanks to a freethrow by Marlo Pono with seven seconds left in the match.
UV on the other hand, creamed USC, 84-72.
With a mammoth crowd cheering for them, the Cobras took control of the lead in the second period, or what was eventually known as the Joseph Nalos show.
Nalos scored 14 points on a variety of daring drives, eight markers coming in an 11-0 run to end the period on top, 36-24.
SWU continued to run roughshod over USC in the third as they established their largest lead of the match at 19, 50-31, after a streaking lay-up by Nalos. Cameroonian big man Justin Aboude canned a buzzer-beating jumper from the baseline to help the Cobras head to the fourth period, up by 18, 56-38.
Nalos ended up with 21 points while Eleazar Armecin added 16. Mike Cantonao was the lone player to reach double figures for USC with 16.
