UV eyes 7-0 sweep

CEBU, Philippines - Fresh from a precarious 80-77 victory over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, nine-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers are back on the floor tonight with a sweep-game sweep on their minds when they take on the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in the main match of the 10th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum.
Ralf Olivares had only four points before showing up in the final one minute when he scored another four straight points for the Lancers that proved to be the key in their victory as he padded their lead to 79-75 with only 19.9 seconds left.
The Jaguars, who trailed only by three points in the final 9.3 seconds when Phil Mercader split his charities, 80-77, had the chance to send the game into overtime but Jun Lapiz missed a desperate heave and just a split seconds before the buzzer, Jason Nudalo made a retrieval but his hesitation attempt was deflected by Mercader.
The loss prolonged the Jaguars’ agony as they crashed to their fifth defeat in six games. Their last chance to avoid their worst finish in the 10-year-old CESAFI is to win against the winless University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers tomorrow.
Adrian Lao had a silent 12 points to lead the 6-0 Lancers, while Mercader added 11 markers. Jerome Silva and rookie center Rene Jun Saycon chipped in 10 points apiece.
Kurt Amores and Gian Carlo Albarillo led the Jaguars with 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Abulaiz Suliman and Lapiz had 13 and 11 points across their names. (THE FREEMAN)
Warriors beat DBTC
Sunday, August 29, 2010

THE University of San Carlos’s (USC) wingman Giovanni Padillo’s comeback in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) came at the most opportune time and he led the Warriors, 85-73, over the Don Bosco Technological Center Greywoves yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Padillo, who has been warming the bench since the start of the season because of a hand injury, was finally given the go-signal by the doctors to play. And he underscored his return by scoring 15 points.
Joven Cortes topped the USC scorers with 17 markers, while Sam Hermosa had 14.
Despite Padillo’s presence, USC is still the most undermanned team in the Cesafi with nine players but this did not stop them from putting up a gallant stand to end the elimination round with a 4-2 record.
Rusty Eager to nail its second win, DBTC started strong and held USC to a tight first half and even led by as much as eight points.
USC coach Mike Reyes decided to field in Padillo halfway in the first quarter when USC was struggling to fend off DBTC.
However, the weeks of inactivity seemed to have dulled Padillo. He bungled his first attempt and turned the ball over in the next possession.
It took him a little while to warm up and when he did, he teamed up with Robert Codilla and Padillo and Cortes to anchor a searing 17-4 run to finally wrest the lead from DBTC, 56-47.
DBTC failed to recover and dropped to 1-4.
In the juniors division, the University of Cebu defeated Cebu Institute of Technology University, 82-79, while the University of the Visayas defeated DBTC, 91-74.
