Jonas is only asking for 1 Million from the Calamity Fund to purchase 18 or 20 garbage shredders. And the honorable Vice Mayor obfuscates with this need ! Public service is what they were sworn to do !

Mandaue Council to tackle dumpsite next week

The Mandaue City Council has deferred to next week discussions on a proposal to have the city placed under a "state of calamity" due to the conditions of the city's garbage dump site in barangay Umapad.

Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna said this did not mean that the council was leaning toward disapproving the proposal.

Fortuna said that "at a glance," there was no need to make the declaration, as proposed by the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC), headed by Mayor Jonas Cortes.

"Their justification for it is that the Mactan Channel is getting polluted," Fortuna said. "The imminent danger, then, is the channel, not the dump site."

A resolution by the CDCC pointed to studies by the University of San Carlos and the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources that indicated imminent danger on the environment posed by the dumpsite.

kung ikaw ang mayor, unsaon man nimo paglihok sa imong mga project kung dili moagi sa council..and you know nga dili jud mosugot ang council...try to think daw unsaon na nimo paglihok without doing beyond the law and ordinances....

well actually that is one big problem.. the mayor could not make a project if the council would only disapprove or will not cooperate. his task is not easy especially when he was left with a lot of crap <sorry for my language> to resolve. it is impossible to solve it in just a snap. put yourselves in the mayor's shoes.. let's see if u can handle the pressure he is into now. witness one council session and ul see for yourselves what those councilors have been doing--sitting pretty. literally.

another point would be of this on going waste management plan of the city. the law states that segregation should start at source. where is the source? household! it is not the task of the mayor to impose this to the pipol. it is the barangay captain's task and people's responsibility. first step was to inform the pipol. but have they done it? and i have heard a lot of pipol blaming the mayor for the trashes uncollected outside their streets. now for those who didnt know about this. all captains had a meeting and seminar regarding this issue. and it is mandated that the BARANGAY should make its plan or scheme. but among the 27 barangays only a few have complied. so all barangay captains should have an action plan and not run when the phone rings. lol

now environmentalists would have wanted the site to be declared as such. why? because not only does it bring foul stench but under RA 9003 OPEN DUMP sites are prohibited. and that umapad dumpsite have caused land water and air pollution. if fortuna said that it is only the channel that's in imminent danger. havent he thought of where that problem started? if only he could see for himself and step on that pile of garbage and smell that stench.. bathe on the that channel. feel what the pipol there are experiencing now. he should think twice. environmentalists are pretty much in favor of what the mayor has done now. if not now then when?!

i have a lot to say in regards with this matter but as for now.. yan nlng muna..

pipol open up your minds.. for the project to be successful.. it should have a full coperation of the pipol and city officials. garbage is not the mayor's problem.. it is OUR problem. well lets hope that all of them will not be too busy with their "politicking" and that these so-called leader of ours would act ryt and serve the city well. may they not only be good leaders but also effective leaders.

If he's a good practicing lawyer P60K is peanuts in private practice so why enter politics nga mas gamay man kag makita kung tinarung. Unya mogasto pa ka pagdagan nimo election. I know somebody who spent more than 500K for the last barangay election. Pila ra gud tawon sueldo sa kapitan? Simple logic ra bro.
