“Breeding ground team”Give and Go

BusinessWorld Online: Give and Go -- By Michael Angelo S. Murillo: Breeding ground team
Another player trade was consummated in the Philippine Basketball Association last week, and hardly surprising one of the teams involved was the Red Bull Barakos, the de facto "breeding ground" team in Asia’s first play-for-pay league.
Last Thursday the Barakos and the Purefoods TJ Giants made official the transfer of defensive stopper Rich Alvarez from the Barakos to the Giants. In exchange for the former rookie of the year and Ateneo de Manila University collegiate standout, Red Bull got Purefoods’ first-round pick in the 2011 rookie draft. The trade of Alvarez followed that of the many major trades Red Bull has made throughout the years which saw it deal away PBA stars Kerby Raymundo, Willie Miller, Lordy Tugade, Rico Villanueva, Larry Fonacier, Junthy Valenzuela and Mick Pennisi in various stages of the team’s PBA existence.
Concomitantly, the trade of Alvarez further underscored Red Bull’s distinction as a breeding ground ball club. By this we mean it’s a team that seemingly takes pride in nurturing "raw" players and eventually lets them loose when the "proper" time comes. We certainly have seen that in the aforementioned former Barakos who went from upstarts and unknowns to become major stars in the PBA.
Red Bull also hasn’t hide its penchant for taking chances on journeyman players and undrafted free agents whose careers the team helped jump-start and/or revive. In the ongoing KFC Philippine Cup, for instance, the Barakos have in their fold a pair of players who are experiencing a rejuvenation of sorts in guys like Paolo Hubalde and Gabby Espinas. After doing the rounds of the league, both Hubalde and Espinas are settling quite well for Red Bull, currently posting career numbers. The two have joined forces with the other erstwhile "outcasts" like Cyrus Baguio, Carlo Sharma, Celino Cruz and Mike Hrabak in keeping the Red Bull flame alive in the season-opening tourney.
Interestingly enough, it has always been like that for Red Bull. Despite the many weighty player departures it involved itself in (just imagine how dominant the Barakos would be had they retained all those high-caliber players they shipped out), it has remained competitive all these years. Sure, the team experienced slides in the aftermath of such trades, but eventually it found a way to cope and fill things up. And for that, credit goes big time to Yeng Guiao and his system which seemingly puts not much premium on always having the most talented player in tow.
On the heels of the Alvarez trade, expect some downturns for Red Bull. But as has been customary for the team, somebody would eventually step up — from this end I see rookie Larry Rodriguez and Leo Najorda doing just that — and have the team on an even keel once again.
With the way things are over there at the Barakos, it’s a sure bet that Alvarez won’t be the last high-profile player to be traded by the team. Once a player reaches his potential and decides to move on I don’t see the Photokina franchise getting in the way. Why should it, really? It has proven itself a master of adaptability with much success and I’m sure it will just move on and search for new players to nurture.

sayang au juntilla wa jud gi honor ang contract nya sa RB
and the question is: "who's the next red bull will go? will it be skyrus baguio? or will it be najorda or espinas?"
Simon out for 2 to 3 weeks
From proud Giants to a walking wounded squad.
That’s how Purefoods has become in the ongoing KFC Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup.
Already limping to a shaky start in the tournament with a 3-4 mark, the Giants found themselves losing another key player to an injury—Peter June Simon.
