On my opinion, ang essentials or "basics" are the following (based on my experience):

    1. HTML and CSS - understanding how front-end works, getting those PSDs into actual web pages
    2. Wordpress, CMS tweaks - if your starting from scratch about PHP - editing or playing around themes of different content management systems is a good start.
    3. CodeIgniter Framework - is a good start for building web applications from the ground - up. Introduces you on how things should be organized both front-end and back-end by following good practices.
    4. After clearing up the above and confident enough at it, you'll be willing to proceed to learn more and its up to you on which way you should go if you really have the passion for it.

    Hope this helps somehow.
