I don’t know Tobias “Toby” Tiangco of Navotas, but I admire his independence and resistance to typecasting. On the other hand, I don’t know Mandaluyong Rep. Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales, either — but I think he stands for everything that is easily caricatured about the members of Congress.
This is certainly not about how these two congressmen look, although that is the easy point of comparison to differentiate the “iconoclastic” (according to Miriam Defensor Santiago) Tiangco and Gonzales, the longtime majority floor leader. This is more about how both the neophyte Navotas lawmaker and the veteran congressman have been acting lately: Tiangco is willing to go against the grain (and sport a cool Goku hairdo) while Gonzales is only too ready to assay the role of traditional politician, palace-backed enforcer and shameless turncoat.
Tiangco gave the Senate impeachment court and the public an idea of how President Noynoy Aquino uses his power over congressmen’s fund releases to force Congress into doing his will, risking the ire of the secretive, old-boy network to which he belongs. Gonzales, on the other hand, has always declared that he will do whatever Aquino wants — just like he always did what Aquino’s predecessor wanted during her term.
It is important to note, however, that a vast majority of the House (going by the number of congressmen who signed the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Renato Corona) can actually be lumped together with Gonzales. On the other hand, Tiangco can only name three congressmen — including himself — who stood up to the powerful majority in the matter of impeaching Corona.
Tiangco has proven himself to be a cut above the rest. Others would sell even their mothers to get elected. I take my hat off to Tiangco —not a politician, but an idealist.
^ Agree @Zebastian rella.
He was interviewed in UKG's Punto por Punto segment this morning.
He even challenged Gonzales to speak against him about the issue, and not just delegate the tasks to Gonzales' spokesperson.
Now, this man (Tiangco) got balls ...and the idealism and principles too!
Congressman Tiangco deserves our support. We should help him bring back the lost pride of nationalism, ethics in leadership and the thirst for excellence. We sorely miss leaders who can fight for Genuine positive change. We, as a nation, deserve leaders with integrity and love for country.
for me, a good example of a brave congressman..dili mg pa itoy ba!..
sayang nobody took any video on how Rep. Tupas presented the powerpoint and what was being said during that caucus. It would have been a great spectacle if someone has presented in the impeachment trial a video recording on what transpired during that day in the House of Rep.
I like his cool GOKU like hairdo.
Super saiyan??hehe
Hero - obviously tinuod jud iyang gipangsulti....kay nasuko man si congressman neftali....and the way the prosecution(congressmen) treated him was obvious that they also confirm that those things toby said was true....although dili nani kahibugngan kay sukad pa sauna, mao naman ni ang modus sa administration....
