I've been reading this thread a while naman since it started pero I just left it for the rest of the people to answer the question hehe. Actually, sakto ang gipangsulti nila diri, dili nalang gani ko gusto mo-repeat pero for the sake of clarity...

You need cables and switches and that's the general rule. The router is sort-of optional. You can do LAN without a router but it's really a pain in the ass to do. You can do manual IP dissemination and it does work. In fact, you can even make your PLDT modem as a router (zyxel p660 something, plug modem to switch directly) only that again, it's a pain in the ass. PLDT and Globe are the only ISPs that I know that give out modems that has DHCP but that all depends on what your ISP will give you.

Buying a real router is really painless especially if you have the money. If you do, turn off ipv6 ip dissemination because sometimes it's quirky especially if you have both ipv4 and ipv6 up. But this is not required.

One more protip, if you guys are just going to play cod4 all day, turn off punkbuster because you might scratch your head, finding out your playmates are getting kicked

Let us know if you need something else.
