    i love that article...

models are products which have to move other products...which means they have to SELL that product which they have been paid to MODEL or to WEAR...whether it be a fragrance, toiletry or jeans....the CLIENT is GOD and when a product doesnt sell then everything that goes with it...model, designer, creator, dies with the product.....

in the world of modelling, as Heidi Klum says in her famous program....one day you're in, the next day you're out.....amen to that...

    BONE STRUCTURE IS DESTINY

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder but the closest objective index of what makes a face striking is bone structure. Piercing eyes, very high cheekbones, a proportionate nose, pouty lips and an angular but symmetrical face will turn a modeling scouts' head twice as fast. If you have such a face, chances are you have been attracting attention for a while now and probably are quite aware of it.

Also, while beauty is subjective, perfect skin is not. Oversized pores, pimples and blemishes are not forgiven in the line of work. Make-up artists have been known to be personally offended when a model showed up to work with a zit. The way the boy or girl looks in person is one thing, the way they photograph, entirely another.

Being photogenic is life or death. If you are one of those people who cannot take a bad picture then this is the industry for you. However, the industry is littered with the dead cards of a thousand beauties who just could not work the camera.
Naomi Campbell once confided to us that ever since she was 16 she has been practicing her poses in the mirror to explore what her best angles and positions are. She has even become sensitive to the angle at which light strikes her face. She claims she can feel bad lighting. It's one of the secrets of her success.

    WALK THE LINE

A model, especially to designers and photographers has to be like ...a walking line drawing. A line drawing are those sketches designers draw to visualize a new design. To them the girl is this long elegant line that makes their dresses and coats and pants look wonderful. This is one reason why models are so unnaturally thin... to achieve this impossibly long, idealized line. The Industry standard for womens clothing samples runs at a size 6 and with some designers even to size 4. This is why a smaller but very proportionate girls like Kate Moss, Kiara and Jamie Rishar will be allowed into the modeling ranks. They give a "long", lean appearance, even though they're not at all tall. An outfit, if a girl is 5 '5" and 95 lbs, can be downsized to fit her, but if a woman dares to go beyond a size 6, the industry will not adjust.
    totally agree with salma

to be or not to be a model, is not really anybody's option unless you have all the necessary elements to become a successful high fashion model. since it is modelling, the physical aesthetics is essential: height 5'7'' to 6' for women and 5'11'' to 6'2'' for men, of course the rest follows: high cheekbones, skinny body, bee-stung lips, etc. you should take excellent photos. that means you must be extremely photogenic to convey various concepts of campaigns, ads and edits. attitude is also important to make you stand out among a bevy of amazing mannequins. english? its necessary if you want to go casting for nyc, milan and paris shows.

it matters a lot if you want to do cosmetics like maybelline, revlon, or covergirl which provides the biggest payouts.
maybe in the phils you can look as homely as one can be coz there is a limited supply of models here.
but nyc/milan/paris circuit? no way. the current IT-girls like snejana onopka, caroline trentini, lily donaldson, hilary rhoda, and georgia frost are all amazingly pretty.

beauty matters though if you're modelling make-ups. because it's the face na make-upan dili ang body. heheh pero kasagaran body gyud ang 1st basihan ana nila esp in ramp modelling.

^ in high fashion you do everything: runways, ads/campaigns, catalogues, and editorials. you are not delegated to one category only. unless you are kate moss or devon aoki who are exceptions to the height rule, there is already no question about the need to be tall. mostly, 5'10"-6' for women. so height is a given factor. to stand out among a group of potential models you need to have an unconventional look. you need to have, at least, a pretty face. because as a model you will not only be doing runway but everything else. and grabbing that cosmetic campaign is the best thing than can happen to a model's career. every model dreams of landing a major cosmetic contract.
for example: if you are one of the It-girls this season, your regular sked would be like this: castings and fittings for new shows come february. after fashion weeks in milan, paris and nyc you dont rest. the photo shoots will begin. photo shoots for editorials, ads/campaigns (if your lucky to land one). after that barely 2 weeks of rest and your back to castings and fittings again for next season's shows. and photo shoots again.
so youre not only walking, walking, walking, but shooting shooting shooting pictures as well.
