Duremdes shows he’s not over the hill
THEY call Kenneth Duremdes Captain Marbel. A more appropriate moniker is probably P6-million man, because he is the last among a few Philippine Basketball Association players, who still command the old league maximum of P500,000 a month or P6 million a year.
And for too long, Duremdes was probably embarrassed for receiving so much for doing so little.
Slowed by injuries and marital woes, the former Adamson stalwart, former league Most Valuable Player and former two-time all-star best player was a shadow of his former self the past year and a half. And his team suffered, too, with the Sta. Lucia Realtors being perennially ranked in the lower half of PBA teams and never among the powerhouses.
But that is in the past. The Sta. Lucia Realtors are back on top and Captain Marbel is leading them.
Their statement victory was a 105-83 rout of Red Bull last Oct. 25, when Duremdes had a team-high 20 points to go with five rebounds and three assists. Red Bull is no pushover and was in solid second place when pulverized by the Realtors.
The Realtors’ latest victory was 102-90 decision over the Talk N Text Phone Pals in an out-of-town game, which cemented their first-place standing.
Sensational rookie Kelly Williams spearheaded the Sta. Lucia assault with 25 points and 11 rebounds. But Duremdes was there, too, adding his 17 points.
This season, with the Sta. Lucia Realtors on top of the standings, Duremdes has proven he is worth every penny of his salary.
The spotlight is on Sta. Lucia’s sensational youngsters: rookies Williams, Mark Isip and Ronnie Bughao, as well as sophomore point guard Alex Cabagnot. But the unsung hero of the Realtors’ turnaround is undoubtedly the man they call Captain Marbel.
