photos are coming out dark... what mode and settings did you use?

judging from the photos it could be the bright light spilling in from
the windows that's throwing the meter off

learn about exposure compensation if using any of the auto modes.
hold down the +/- button on top near the shutter...

...and turn the dial to +2

if in manual mode make sure your meter...

...circled in red... is showing +''''''''''0 -

still the most easy thing for a beginner is to just set your camera
to sports mode and go with it

di gud lalim sayun mag shoot ug sports (especially low light or indoors) hehe... IMO sa D5000 mas maayo gi video nalng... especially if dili fast ang burst speed sa cam..

don't be too preoccupied with not getting above par shots.

these (your kid's game) is one moment you should cherish with or without getting those
    near perfect shots.
this is about HIS game, especially that it's so obvious he's going against bigger opponents so these captured moments should be a milestone for him...and yours too as a parent.

my tip lang gyud is....enjoy shooting and your cam lang gyud and before you know it
u will get those shots u wanted w/o even knowing it.

hey, even those people w/ cumbersome setups and expensive gear can't even nail that near perfect shot
so kining imo shot is good enough---indoor w/o that sufficient lighting, moving/sports pa gyud.
so I guess you pretty much nailed it.
    CONGRATS!!!

yup. just enjoy shooting. also don't forget to take shots after the game especially him with his friends. pictures make memories last longer

well, also because of the magic of post processing, you can save the under exposed shots by trying this:

    1) Load the image into Photoshop.
    2) Press Ctrl+L to access levels.
    3) Move the arrows on the bottom around to get the image you want.
    4) Press Ctrl+S to Save.

    Nice shots, by the way.
