MANILA, Philippines - National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Lito Banayo said on Wednesday that new stocks of rice fortified with iron will be sold to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for its day-care food program.
"These are new stocks for the day-care feeding program. We would probably even sell iron-fortified rice," Banayo said in an interview on ANC's Dateline Philippines.
Banayo denied an ABS-CBN News report that the DSWD will buy spoiled rice from the NFA.
"I never said anything like that," he said, adding that only a small part of the NFA's total rice stock are spoiled.
Banayo added that the spoiled rice, which are not fit for human consumption, will be sold as animal feeds or organic fertilizer.
