Get both lenses if you can afford them. You can use the 35 in FX mode but it will have a slight vignette on the corners, still usable in some situations like portraiture.

    sir,
just get the 50mm sir... just taking a step backward or forward compensates the 35mm or FX/DX issue
spend the remaining money buying time to shoot

35mm at Pixel pro cash is P12,000
    AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G | Nikon

50mm you can find one here in istorya used for less than 5K or even cheaper on PiPHO.

I personally prefer the 35mm as a match to the Kit lens. It is just as sharp and same as the 50 gets really sharp at around F/2. I find it more versatile, especially for family or event shooting as it is a bit wider, bright and has very little distortion.

If a few steps back can work for the 50, then a few steps forward (about 2 or 3) will conversely work for the 35. The problem is, if the room is small - say karaoke room, how do you step back with the 50. Here is another one, if you need to take a close shot of say the wedding ring exchange in a wedding - if you step back, another Photographer is going to step in front of you.

If you have the money go for the 12-24 f/2.8 hehe.

tuscania is right.... 35mm DX is best even its more costly than the 50mm

it will do great on tight and cramped places. I overlooked about shooting inside karaoke rooms because I viewed things on my shooting genre. On videoke rooms with friends I'd bring a lumix because my slr is in my cabinet sleeping

a wider 12-24 f2.8 or the 35mm on a wedding and shooting the exchanging of rings instead of a 70-200 or 50mm on a DX?? now this I want to witness

why would anyone use a mid-focal prime lens to a very limited narrow area? make your life easier ^^

    @ tuscania

12-24mm & 35mm on a church wedding during their ring exchange rites? do you want to join the couple nearby in their once-in-a-lifetime moment with all other people facing? i would wear clerical clothing for that.

another photographer to step-in and blocks; aren't you going to plan the shootings with your co-photographer before the session and request the other concerned people in the celebration to stay away on the sight of the official photographer/s for the sake of not ruining the service to make once-in-a-lifetime still moment photos?

nevertheless, i would like to see also those focal points used during wedding ring exchange rites as subject. quite interesting indeed.

    Default FS: Canon 50mm f1.8

    Hi,

Since the 50mm is mentioned here, I thought I'd post my Canon 50mm f1.8 up FOR SALE. Bought a month ago (around July 2, 2010) at Camera Haus in Mall of Asia for Php4,999.00. Warranty and receipt intact. Lens is barely used. Decided to sell this so I can get closer to affording the Sigma 30mm (Php21k), hehe.

If you want to shoot portraits with great DOF, this is the lens for it. I need wider for video work.

    I'm Cebu based. Txt: 0917 6316039

    Thanks!

My Bad - am not comparing a telephoto to a prime or wide lens. I use a pre-owned 70-300 as I like candid across the room portraits and could not afford the 70-200.

I was just answering to the comparison or preference between a 50 and a 35.

As for the wedding ring rights - bad example, I agree that most weddings nowadays and churches are more strict with "altar crowding" - here the 70-200 of course would be the lens to use. But I still do see some weddings get crowded especially the part "all the brides friends" and "all the grooms relatives". Here I prefer to use my wider glass so less chances of a P&S getting in front of me.

hehe, Bro Chip & Recon maybe this would have been a better example.

Weddings aside, I have seen people tote around their DSLR's in malls and almost every other place. Just thinking that for those of us who cannot afford a plethora of lenses, to choose between the 50 and the 35 - I still would go with the 35 on a DX.

Just a casual hobbyist here, nowhere near you mga masters.

    Default Ring exchange shots

By the way, i got curious about your comments on seeing ring exchange photo's at short focal lengths, so i searched on flicker using search phrases:

    Wedding Hands and

    wedding ring exchange

Observed something interesting - the shorter focal lengths this at 36mm f/4.0
Exif | Solemnization Ceremony a.k.a. "Akad Nikah" | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

and many other at the similar lengths through 50 or 55mm f/2.8
Exif | Hands & Rings on Bible | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

are much more clearer than these at 200mm f/2.8
    Exif | IMG_2346 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I am not sure if any of the flicker shots use a high-end telephoto lens - but in general anything shot with the long lens looks a bit noisy.

My wedding in Manila was done by Nelson Villarica (yes of the 900 pawnshop group) and I remember him coming close to get the "hand shot". I checked the EXIF and he used an EOS D30 at 35mm f/6.7 iso800 1/60

And by the way, Nelson was wearing a very nice Armani Suit. Better dressed than me. haha.
