Al-Farouq Aminu Returning for Sophomore Season

Aminu coming back to build on outstanding freshman campaign
    April 13, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest forward Al-Farouq Aminu has announced he will return for his sophomore season in 2009-10. Aminu has decided to stay in school and build upon a stellar rookie campaign.

"In order to end further speculation, I am excited to announce my return to Wake Forest for my sophomore year," said Aminu. "My experience at Wake Forest has been terrific. I have grown as a student, as a person and as a basketball player. The NBA is a dream of mine, but my family and I feel like now is not the right time.

"Coach Gaudio and I talk every day about my growth as a player and his expectations for me. I am very excited about my new role as a veteran leader and the potential of next year's team."

Aminu averaged 12.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for the Demon Deacons last season. The Norcross, Ga. native led all ACC freshmen in rebounding and was second in scoring. He posted 10 double-doubles, which was the fourth-most among all league players.

A five-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree, Aminu was a unanimous selection to the ACC All-Freshman Team and was named a Freshman All-American by multiple publications.

"I am incredibly excited for our basketball team and very happy for Al-Farouq and his family," said Wake Forest head coach Dino Gaudio. "He has been a pleasure to coach, a terrific teammate and a vital part of Wake Forest basketball and this University.

"His decision reflects his maturity and his understanding that he needs to develop certain areas of his game. With Al-Farouq's tireless work ethic, he will continue to be an impact player at Wake Forest and in the ACC. There is also no doubt in my mind he will be a terrific future NBA player."

Hasheem Thabeet declares for NBA Draft

UConn junior center Hasheem Thabeet, projected to go no lower than third in most ‘09 NBA mock drafts, officially threw his name into the draft today.

Huskies coach Jim Calhoun called Thabeet, “One of the most dominant defensive players in the history of college basketball,” and said he’s ready to make the jump to the League.

The 7-3 Thabeet averaged 13.6 points, 10.8 boards and 4.2 blocks this season (16 games of five-plus blocks), winning Big East Co-Player of the Year with Pitt’s DeJuan Blair. In January he posted a triple-double against Providence with 15 points, 11 boards and 10 blocks, and against Seton Hall in February dropped 25 points, 20 boards and nine blocks.

Georgetown says Monroe to stay for sophomore year
    10 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Georgetown says Big East rookie of the year Greg Monroe is sticking around for his sophomore season.

Monroe is a 6-foot-10 center who was second on the Hoyas in scoring average at 12.7 and led the team in rebounding average at 6.5 as a freshman.

He also led the team in total blocks and was second in assists.

Georgetown was ranked as high as No. 9 in the AP Top 25 before losing 12 of its last 16 games to finish 16-15. The Hoyas lost to Baylor in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament.

Also Wednesday, Georgetown said sophomore guard Omar Wattad will transfer. He is the third Hoyas basketball player in the past two years to leave for another school.
