@parts - UV filter - mostly that's just protection for the front element of the lens; prevents dirt or fingerprints getting on the lens itself....there are other filters which give an effect (polarizer, etc.), but that's another story...

lens hood - main function is to prevent lens flare....see this one...Lens hood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

metering modes - unless you use Auto mode (in which case you have an expensive and heavy P&S camera), they won't have a direct effect on the photo. they just tell you what the camera thinks is the correct exposure, and you can use it as a guide. maybe you should read this one....Basic Principles of Photography

I'm not sure if this is based on theory but in my experience shooting toys, I always use spot metering because I put my toys in front of a single color background, e.g., white, black, now green. When I use spot metering, I manually evaluate white balance too against a white typewriting paper since I don't have what pros call a white card or neutral gray card.

For subjects that aren't against a single color background or the scene doesn't have a dominant color, I use evaluative a.k.a, pattern? matrix metering. I haven't found a use for center weighted yet but maybe I should try it sometime.

I'm new in this field but just like traditional art, there are no rules, only time-tested guidelines. I started out learning the technical aspect of photography with my P&S and I'm ready to move on. I have yet to develop "the eye" just like my friend from Japan, take a look at the photos he took from his film camera and he told me he didn't read any book about photography or went to a seminar. I guess he's a natural.
