There was a period sometime between 2003-2004 that I had frequent bangungot. But it got to the point that it was happening regularly that it didn't even become alarming--only annoying. First, the feeling of not being able to breathe, turned out to be more psychological than physiological--you can breathe. But yes, it's true--it's very hard to move. But I've developed an S.O.P. in dealing with it:
a) Check your breathing--if it's unobstructed, then just breathe normally. There was even an instance where I actually fell back to sleep when I found out that even if I couldn't move, I was still breathing, so ok ra.
b) If you want to move, start with the extremities (i.e. fingers, toes) and do it gently and slowly, think of it as a game. When you're able to move them, chances are you will be able to "wake up" or get out of that paralyzed state
c) Afterwards I drink a lot of water--I noticed that if I didn't drink water and went back to sleep again, there is a 50-50 chance that I will have it again in a few hours.
I personally think it's something like a "binhud" of the brain--because I felt a buzzing feeling (like when your feet gets binhud) in my head whenever I have bangungot. Funny though, I haven't had it again since that time.
