What is a Puppy Mill?
As others have stated, it is not a good place for a puppy!
As far as I'm concerned, a there are several groups of people who breed dogs.
Ill list them, good to bad
1: Reputable Breeder/ Fancier:: Usually breeds a dog for show qualities and the betterment of the breed. They will often only sell their puppies with a "no breed" contract, as they have kept the pick of the litter to show. The other pups that aren't "quite as good or may not meet the show Standard" are considered PET Quality. Still excellent puppies, usually healthier and less prone to problems.
2. Home/Family Breeder: This is usually a family that decided to breed their family pet.
3. Back Yard Breeder (BYB): These are breeders who have more than one dog producing puppies. Often they may have a couple of pens out back, or if the dog is small, they'll have them in a room in the house, they may not care about bettering the breed, or the health of the dogs they are breeding. This is a business, though they swear that they love their dogs. Some of these may be ethical. You just have research!!!
4. Puppy Mill: Breeders of more than 3 different breeds of dogs. Usually these dogs are raised outside (often in cages), and while some may be treated well...more often than not, they are in deplorable conditions, and they are not selling to the public....it is for profit, not for the care and promotion of the breed. These should be avoided at all cost!~ Most puppies from these "breeders" end up in pet shops or 3rd party sellers. Be careful when you search for a puppy....If you look on some of the websites, look to see how many breeds they have? How many puppies for sale? How can anyone give proper care to 30-50 puppies
A puppymill is just like a chicken farm but worse. The mother is kept in a cage for her whole breeding life. That is all she does, have puppies litter after litter after litter. They have several mother doges haveing puppies all the time. When they get old enough they sell them to stores and from ads in the paper. Most times they do not give them shots or worm them. Also the mother. The mother could get something and pass it along to the pups and they won't tell you if the mother was sick or anything. You could buy a nice looking puppy that has something and could cost you a lot in vet bills or just die on you.
My point is:
Never buy from someone you think is running a puppymill.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion.
