aguy dong, sowee to blow your bubble but your argument is a bit twisted...2.5% growth rate is not alarming? 78 million people and counting...unsay imo'ng ipaka-on sa katawhan...way bugas ang pilipinas...facts are facts you can not argue with that...Originally Posted by d_lightt

please take your time and read...
IMHO, CONTRACEPTION is the best way to control overpopulation. This issue has been like a see-saw. teeter-totter in the philippines if you look back the last 30 years or so...
MARCOS: "enthusiastically embraced the concept and the program...it was deemed a success (avg family size was effectively halved within a decade)"
CORY: "catholic church gained extraordinarily political influence and lost no time converting their power into changes in policy"
RAMOS: "the family planning program enjoyed a brief revival, especially with the help of Dr. Juan Flavier who was denounced by the catholic church for promoting unapologetically all methods of family planning"
ERAP: "pursue the program in accordance with the new paradigm of reproductive health and also seemed to delight in upsetting the catholic hierarchy"
GMA: "family planning acceptable to the catholic church and proceeded to promote abstinence and the rhythm method...she also made inaccurate and misleading statements about the efficacy of the rhythm method, claiming that it is 99% effective".

Further, "The constitution states separation of church and state. The state must be responsible for the people's well being and quality of life for all filipinos, not just catholics. The church has the more limited responsibility for the moral values and religious beliefs of its people. If the church believes peope are entitled to a decent life then it ought to become a very active participant in reducing the population growth rate, otherwise it must accept part of the responsibility of the poverty".
Exactly...did you read that link on kurdapya's post...please do...
USAID has already stopped providing contraceptives to our country and our government is not allocating any funds to buy more supplies even if there is already a shortage of free contraceptives for the poorest filipinos. This should be a wake-up call for all of us.
LET'S HELP PUSH OUR GOVERNMENT DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM.

one measure of overpopulation is population density.though we have relatively higher population density with countries our size, it is not exactly that alarming. as d_lightt suggested, we are not necessarily in a state of overpopulation.
only problem is that population density is NOT the only measure for overpopulation. we can say that a country is overpopulated if the resources that it has, and its capabilities to acquire these resources cannot necessarily sustain the inhabitants of that country.
may i again reiterate that the causes of overpopulation is NOT UNILINEAR. it is not simply the lack of education, or the preachings of religion. the problem of overpopulation does not follow a line, but a web of factors that influence and affect each other.

go convince the guys @ NSO, coz they were the ones who came to University of San Carlos to lecture us about that and along with that KEPKO thingy.. korean power company something..
overpopulation in my humble opinion is simply a by-product/chain reaction of other problems that existing on a country.. we're talking about illiteracy, poverty and other socio-economic factors.. we can never "solely" held the church as the source of this problem..
on some extent ur right buddy! but can't the church do something about the problem other than just saying that the church is pro-life and blah blah blah.... the church's been collecting a lot money every sunday but never did the people know where all those money go..hmmmm...
NSO probably has their own agenda. Now, please tell me in summary what the lecture was about.Originally Posted by [EarlZ]
yes, illiteracy...lack of education about family planning and contraceptives.Originally Posted by giver_bert
poverty? does poverty drive the people to have more kids?
or you mean irresponsibility? do you honestly think it's responsible to have kids you cannot afford?
poverty = more kids? is that a sound decision?
please enumerate this so-called "socio-economic factors"...thank you.
