MANILA, Philippines—Liga Pilipinas, a community-based basketball league seeking to develop talents from the countryside, kicks off on May 23 to 25 in three key cities of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Made up of 16 teams representing North and South, the league will hold two conferences lasting four months each per season.
Representing the North are Luzon teams Ilocos Sur, Baguio, Pampanga, Taguig, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna and Rizal. Comprising the South are Cebu, Mandaue, Bacolod and Iloilo (Visayas) and Misamis Oriental, Zamboanga, Davao and Ozamis (Mindanao).
Conceptualized by former Philippine Basketball Association commissioner Noli Eala, Liga Pilipinas allows each team to have 14 players (12 to play), including two former professionals and a foreigner with Filipino roots.
“There’s still a lot of talent in the regions,” Eala said in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue.
He said that Liga Pilipinas doesn’t intend to go head-to-head with the PBA just as the Metropolitan Basketball Association did from its birth in 1998 to its demise in 2002.
“I think the MBA became too eager to compete with the PBA,” said Eala. “That will never happen with the Liga because how can you compare yourself with a 33-year-old league.”
The board of Pinoy Basketbol Inc., which owns Liga Pilipinas, is made up of chair Nathaniel “Tac” Padilla, vice chair Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno, treasurer Jose Soberano, Michelle Lhuillier, Tagaytay City Mayor Bambol Tolentino, Tito Palma, Andrew Teh, Jean Teh, Eala, and three representatives from team owners.

“A geographic, club-based league that is community-managed and supported – and endowed with commercial and local government funding principally patterned after EuroLeague basketball.
. . . together . . .
. . . we shall create a basketball league that is uniquely Pinoy – dominated by the Filipino youth’s exuberance, punctuated by Pinoy color and wit and overflowing with the indomitable heroic spirit of the Filipino.
. . . we shall have a perfect venue for grassroots development of the sport of basketball and begin a whole new concept of “club teams” in commercial sports.
. . . we shall present a fresh and viable concept of sports marketing and the use of sports in a truly integrated and effective advertising strategy for niche markets and target communities.
. . . we shall promote sports tourism in the country-side which will generate countless opportunities for economic growth and social development.
WE WILL GIVE BACK TO THE FANS WHAT THE FANS HAVE GIVEN TO BASKETBALL.
