Akong idol si Kai Hahto, a Finnish drum-teacher and the drummer of the Finnish metal band Wintersun, and the former drummer of grindcore band Rotten Sound. Beside these, he has played in many other bands, with styles varying from black metal to jazz.

Like with everything else - practice. Maybe the easiest way to learn keeping time with your left foot on the hats is first - keep a basic 8/8 beat and have your left foot follow the right hand - then take your right hand off the hats and move it to the ride or floor tom while your left foot is still doing 8's on the hats. If you feel more comfortable with it - start making different patterns with your hands while your left foot still keeping time.
